I disagree with your take. Fred Smith could write checks for years for Memphis and Tulane has the money as well. They understand jumping to the new MWC (PAC) simply does not help their goals of getting an invite to the Big 12 or the ACC. Frankly, if the TV money for the new MWC (PAC) is not greater than the AAC, it will be simply another G5 plus.
Unles the PAC gets an AQ spot in the playoff, which they won’t, they are a G6 like the rest of us. They will be playing for that same spot.
Correct, they won’t have an AQ spot and will be considered a G6 conference. However, the highest-ranked G6 conference champion still gets the auto bid, and that’s where the PAC has the edge.
The PAC will likely be viewed as stronger than any other G6 league other than the current AAC. If Memphis, Tulane, UTSA, and USF end up joining the PAC, the AAC's competitive and perceived strength will take a serious hit. In that scenario, the PAC champion would almost certainly get the playoff bid especially with the media leaning into the "strength of schedule" narrative.
A 13-0 SBC champion (UL or anyone else) probably won't be ranked ahead of an 11-2 or 12-1 PAC champion. Realistically, the playoff window narrows dramatically unless the AAC stays intact. If it does, the G6 bid likely comes down to either the PAC or AAC champion.
If UL ever wants a real shot at making the College Football Playoff, it won’t happen as a Sun Belt program, and that’s exactly why all of this is so important.
Features of the expanded playoff include:[22]
Guaranteed bids for the top five conference champions in the CFP rankings; no conference has an automatic bid, a conference must have a minimum of eight members for its champion to be eligible for a guaranteed bid.
At-large bids for the seven highest-ranked remaining teams, which could include additional conference champions.
Wazzu and Oregon state have each had 1 relevant season in 25 years…it’s the MWC and Texas state. Those AAC schools are holding out for the final alignment, they can do the same in the AAC as the pac without all the travel, which eats up that extra tv money. If you really want a chance at the playoff you don’t sign your team up for 1300-2400 mile road trips for a third of the season.
Exactly! We've had multiple 10 win season in the SBC and it's not enough. We are now in the wrong room. We've reached our ceiling in the SBC.
It has to be the AAC. The Sunbelt no longer has ties to Florida and Texas. This is important for recruiting and TV markets.
As a fan, I dont care about regional travel. I want easy travel to watch my Cajuns compete against recognized brands.
One could easily create a weekend trip to DFW, Houston, Memphis, NOLA, Birmingham and Tulsa.
Compare that to Troy, Monroe, Jonesboro, and Marshall.
Time to move
