Thread: PAC 12

  1. Default PAC 12

The PAC 12 is reportedly finalizing a deal for $13.4M per team and is poised to invite Texas State. Other schools they are looking at are North Texas, Memphis and Tulane. UL is not mentioned. If UL was being considered, would $13.4M be enough additional revenue to make this move? How much additional revenue would UL have if it averaged 30,000 per game in football and over 8,000 in basketball? I doubt that we average 15,000 now, so that would be huge. Would a much better conference schedule improve attendance? How would this impact basketball attendance with our new coach. Gonzaga would be huge.

Washington State, Oregon State, Boise State, Utah State, San Diego State, Colorado State, Gonzaga, Texas State, Louisiana

Should UL talk to Texas State and approach the PAC 12 as a travel partner for them. Travel to the West shouldn't be any more costly than travel to the East. Would this greatly change the perception of UL to the public? We have the academics and the facilities. If the PAC 12 was willing to go as far as New Orleans, Lafayette shoudn't be a problem. Can we sell ourselves to the PAC 12? Do we want to make such a move or maintain status quo? The future may not bring any other options.

If you aren't actively creating a buzz about conference potential, you aren't serious about raising money.

Or stay in the SBC hoping the next TV contract is negotiated in a much larger sum per team as we are currently getting screwed by espn for our product.

TXST can go from falling short of expectations in the SunBelt to falling short of expectations in the *PAC12.

*it’s not really the PAC 12.

I like TXST. San Marcos is a great college town. The university is solid. They have good facilities and decent fan support when they are winning. I’d like them to stay, but they clearly want to jump ship.

Sad to see some guarantee wins go West if they do.

$13.4M dollars is really hard to turn down.

With that said, every away conference game would be in the mountain and pacific time zones. Away basketball games would start at 8-9pm. Away football games would usually start at 10:30pm. And I suspect all our home games would be early because we’d be the only team in the conference that could fill an early time slot. So brutal for the fan base.

Hate to break it to you, but if it's being reported they're looking at North Texas and Tulane also, then Texas State already has its travel partner.

Oh make no mistake. Our chances of getting an invite are close to zero. It is still all about markets.

I wouldn’t count Louisiana out. Tulane and Memphis are not joining the PAC.

Absolutely go for the Pac12. Tulane, UNT, Memphis or any other AAC member will have to pay substantial buyout fees to leave the AAC. When AAC expanded, the rumor (not confirmed or anything) was that ESPN didn't want any SBC schools to go over to AAC so if the PAC media deal has ESPN involved, they might not want the best properties moving over as that would bring down the AAC value.

I think it's a no brainer to move over if we can. Better football, basketball and more media money and exposure. Would rather play Boise State or Oregon State each season than I would Troy or ULM.

Although across the country, we could do worse than being associated with Boise, Gonzaga, Colo St. and others. Since these are long term decisions, is there more risk staying put over the next 10 years than making a move? While there is high potential for continued realignment in the G6 level we've all learned its really hard to kill off a conference. A few years ago I thought CUSA was done for, but its been resurrected even if mostly misfits. We're kidding ourselves if we believe Sunbelt membership will remain 'safe' in the coming realignment. Our member friends will take off on us in a New York second if it benefits them. UL should be kicking the tires on the PAC. Although its high end G6, its still G6 with the risk of knowing another realignment coming less than 10 years from now.

If we as a University aren't actively involved in moving up, then we never will. Don't forget the SunBelt east schools are gonna bolt as soon as they can. If we aren't proactive with this stuff, we're gonna once again find ourselves still in the same conference with ULM and a bunch of new scrubs in a conference trying to work its way back up. People always talking about getting rid of ULM instead of moving up and away from them and this conference.
