I’m not lowering it. I’m stating what the actual results have been for the program.
Some seem to think that 1999-2000 and 2013-2017 are the norm. They’re not.
They’re outliers and should obviously be celebrated.
To compare every team, every year to that is misguided at best.
All of this same stuff was said all year last year, and the season ended in a regional. This one may or may not.
All true. Yet, again, in the top 75% of the RPI teams in the country. And above .500, in the middle of the pack of the 5th best conference in the country. And coming off a season that ended in a regional, with a (probably outside) chance to finish this one there as well.
So does the team suck? Or are expectations unrealistically high?
One thing that is unsustainable is elite level attendance for “above average” quality baseball. Whether or not the heights of the 2013-2016 run can ever be achieved again, we built a 6,000+ seat ballpark off the fan interest spike from those years. Ignoring 2021 we are in a steady decline with our attendance numbers, and butts in seats are falling off quicker than the numbers. Our stadium was less than half full for a Friday night game against a hated conference foe and Top 10 team. If we choose to embrace the narrative that expectations are just too high, so be it. But we will have another Cajun Field situation on our hands. Feel free to tack on a few extra LBs and spread out. The Tigue is starting to feel nice and spacious these days.
Ha. Far from it. I actually played at this level and know a little bit about it.
Enough to know that hitting a rocket right at someone for a DP with the bases loaded, then hitting another and being robbed of a walk off HR before taking strike 3 on a close pitch doesn’t mean a player choked, sucks, can’t get the job done, etc.
I also know that giving up 5 hits, walking one, striking out 11 and giving up 2 earned runs to this Coastal team in 11 innings isn't "terrible" pitching.
And I know that, unlike football and basketball players who have full ride scholarships to play here, these guys on the baseball team are actually paying money to go to school here and to play Cajun baseball. And that some actually turn down money to do it.
So my perspective, and emotion level, is just different than a lot of the posters here.
