Man yesterday was kick in the nuts. Had em on the ropes
A team can play up to the competition for a night/weekend and still be quite mediocre. We haven't locked in a spot, much less a favorable seed, in our own conference tourney with 3 weekends left. We have flashes of brilliance and have proven that we have some serious talent on this team. I think that's what makes it even more frustrating. There is no pitching philosophy or system, and no coaching going on whatsoever. We still continue to run ourselves out of innings. Yea yea, aggressiveness. That works against bad teams and that's why some were able to defend it in the early season. Like it was stated earlier, good teams find a way to win, bad teams find a way to lose. If we are playing at a level that you deem acceptable, then you are rewarding mediocrity. This team could and should be knocking on 40 wins at this point. Instead, we are sitting here wondering if we'll even make our conference tournament. That last statement should never be a concern of this program. The way we played Coastal is how I would have expected and by no means, a terrible weekend. On top of the rest of the season, it's a moral victory that gets us squat. We again beat a top 10 team and now have an inferior opponent next weekend. Let's see how we bounce back. A series win is a must, but with the remaining schedule, a sweep is probably what is needed.
"The Thrill of Victory, the agony of defeat."
What I’ve witnessed this season is a team, that when we are locked in and focused can play with anyone in the country. The problem has been tremendous inconsistency in focus. The effort is always there, but the focus, especially on the bump has been lacking. Except for the biggest games.
We can still finish strong and with the SBC format, if we get in, will benefit this team. Let’s close out the season strong and win another SBC title.
At least we'll have some BSB on the screen for cinceaux de maeaux.
Cajuns up in funroe.
Man, we had yesterday. Gotta go down swinging.
Let's Geaux.
Sometimes, you bring the A game to the yard and still get beat. Tip of the cap to Covid Carolina. Damn gritty bunch of dudes.
Someone asked me the other day how many games I've done on the radio and I honestly don't know. When I first started, we did only about 20 games on the radio each season. We gradually added games and by 2000 we were doing all of them. I'm going to guess it's between 1600 and 1700.
As someone who loves the game of baseball (and it's easily the game I know the most about) I have to say yesterday was probably one of the top ten college games I've broadcasted.
As a Cajuns fan, the result sucked. But it was beautiful baseball. Great defense by both teams. Pitching was stellar. At the end, CCU made one more play than we did. But, make no mistake. They're really good.
There were some comments made on this thread I'd like to address.
First, to suggest Rock won't get drafted because he hasn't hit as many home runs or RBI as last year is ludicrous. Scouts trust what they see, not what's on the stat sheet. MLB.com listed the top 150 draft prospects...not just college, but overall. Rock was #124. Do the math. Now, there's no guarantee he'll go in the top five rounds, but I'll be very surprised if he falls out of the top ten. BTW, Julian Brock checked in at 105.
Our pitching certainly has been inconsistent. But I'm not sure I agree with the statement that we aren't developing. Has Christie gotten better this season? Marshall? Nezuh? If your answer to any of these is "no" then you aren't paying attention. I honestly thought the comment might have had some merit at one time. But I'm seeing guys develop.
Let's also remember we have three guys we were counting on that are injured. Theut is probably out, Hammond is a question mark the rest of the season as is McGehee. If those three had been healthy all year, I think we'd be complaining less about the pitching staff.
BUT, that being said, we have to recruit better in that regard. NIL will make it that much more difficult because everyone wants an elite pitcher. We are still near the top of the league in ERA, despite the struggles. It's not just an issue here, folks.
I agree the inconsistency has been frustrating at times. I don't know where we will be after the final nine games. But I've seen enough of this team to know if we get to the tournament, regardless of seed, if we are playing our best baseball, taking the best of what we've done offensively and on the mound, we are good enough. We just have to be consistent. I don't see anyone else that's that much damn better than we are.
I know most of you don't listen to the broadcasts (a sincere thank you to those who do), but coach said before yesterday's game Nezuh will start this Friday. He's developed a plus plus changeup and, regardless of what his ERA says, he's really gotten a lot better.
Now that I've been nice.....
Tony used to talk all the time about those who were only results oriented. Win and you're great. Lose and you suck. For ANYONE to be moaning and _____ing after yesterday's game missed a great game. This team has been criticized and some if it is warranted. But geez Louise.....
And no one is a bigger idiot than the one who said he despises this team. There were two posters in particular that did nothing but argue and _____ in this thread. Those two do not know the game of baseball and I'm done with whiners and tiddy babies. So, they've joined the other two posters that I've blocked. I'm betting my life will be better because of it.
We need to be successful next weekend. And, that's what I'm going to focus on...because there's nothing we can do about the first 46 games.
Have a great Monday.
Yesterday was a damn fine ball game. Wish I could have been an unbiased spectator.
I’m at a loss with where we are right now. I think this lineup can swing it with anyone and the crazy thing is, with the addition of everyday Higgs and DeBo getting healthy, we’re getting better. Pitching has such high highs and low lows. Injuries of course limit what we can do going down the stretch.
I’ll just cling to the fact that this team always seems to play up.
I get the ERA argument. What’s hurt is the timing of those earned runs. For example, gave up 3 runs against App State walking 2 batters home…lost 3-2. Yesterday was the same score, but gave up the crucial runs at the most crucial times. But with that said, bats didn’t get it done.
You couldn’t have asked the pitchers to do more than what they did in yesterday’s game. The volatility is what’s hurting this team more than anything.
Play that identical game 10 times (up until Coastal's game tying HR) and Louisiana wins 8 out of 10.
