It also takes a lot of time and effort to play football.
Maybe he realized that it wasn't worth his time to stay on the team in a situation where he was never going to start. Most people don't come to play sports at UL just to wear the jersey. He's not Rudy.
I'm not saying he should or shouldn't have left the team, but give me a break with General Patton and courage and Cajuns football. Patton was a war hero. Whether or not someone decides to stick around and hold a clipboard has nothing to do with General Patton, war or courage.
He is a Sophomore. 2+ years left. Nobody said he was gonna hold the clipboard for 2+ years, and much like life football doesn't guarantee anyone anything. Was he lied to and promised he would start no matter what as a Sophomore?
I believe the generals statement holds for more than just war. Obviously the consequences of Hunley quitting are not that of a soldier quitting---and I never even came close to saying they were. But please also note I am not the one who attached that quote to a post on a football forum.
"Maybe he realized that it wasn't worth his time to stay on the team in a situation where he was never going to start. Most people don't come to play sports at UL just to wear the jersey. He's not Rudy."
You are right, Rudy had more moral courage than Hunley. And so do every one of the other UL backups who didn't get into the game, and who ALSO probably didn't come to school with the intention of not playing. Quit before, or quit after the season....not during.
It's just a game. I'm sure he is a nice guy. I just think he made a mistake quitting on his team just because the going got rough.
I too wish him well, and am sorry things didn't work out for him here. My only beef is in his quitting in the middle of the season, particularly after such a dismal loss. I'm not sure about NCAA regs, but it doesn't seem to me that leaving the team in mid-season vs. after the season would make any difference to his eligibility.
If that is the case, then I stand (or at least sit at my computer screen) corrected. I seem to recall (that is sometimes a stretch for us AARP card holders!) that the D-1AA eligibility rule was changed fairly recently to disallow such easy transfers. Maybe someone else can address this. At any rate, if he would become eligible one year from the date HE ENROLLED at another D-1A school, then he still wouldn't be able to play next fall regardless of whether he left mid-season or after the season. He still wouldn't be able to enroll until the spring semester. AHHH! UNLESS..., unless he transfers to a school on the quarter system, like ...
LA Tech! Hmmm, I wonder. A school with a long history of drop-back quarterbacks and known historically for their passing attack. I don't know what kind of offense Tech has installed this year under the new Dooley regime, but I'd be surprised if they turned their backs on their history. You heard it here first! Just speculating here from far-off Mandeville. Whatever he decides to do, I do sincerely wish him all of the best. I appreciate him signing on with the Cajuns and giving us a shot.
BTW, my dad played football at LA Tech, so I do have a special place in heart for them. It's just behind, waaay behind the Cajuns! Tech is my #2 team.
our rushing game will only give us an advantage if it rains. sure .. you may tell me that whoever runs the ball and controls the clock will win the game, but that rule doesn't apply to this game if the field is dry. with troy having such a niche in passing the ball, all we will do is give them the ball with less time to play, and they will be forced to throw. see the problem? our pass defense is abysmal. if we don't make plays in the secondary, we lose ... again.
i hope it rains!
