Every super successful program becomes a talent graveyard at certain positions at some point.
The question the HS athlete has to ask himself is this, where can I go to get enough exposure to get noticed by the NFL scouts.
You need two elements, playing time, and program exposure. UL has proven beyond doubt that you get enough exposure for NFL purposes. The only other question is can I hit the field to get myself noticed. My ego says yes.
So while you are right, the odds still favor the kid who picks UL.
Geaux Cajuns
Last night I saw a running back for the Saints from some school named West Texas A & M. Today as in the past you do not need to play at a big time school to get picked big time. The year Elway was picked a kid from McNutt U was picked in the first round. Terry Bradshaw from LTUR was picked first round first players and they were really small time back then.
The list goes on and on about players from nowhere schools ending up in the Canton Hall of Fame. Another example is Phil Simms of Morehead State. The most important thing is to get on the field and perform, and if you are sitting behind an all everything you will never practice with the first unit and have little playing time and maybe never get drafted.
The most impressive things in my humble opinion about Mr. Granier are that he is highly intelligent, a great student, and has already overcome great adversity with his knee surgeries. He assessed his situation and decided that UL was the place for him at this time without wasting any more semesters at La. A&M College at Baton Rouge. Unlike other so-called stars at Refineryville, he carries no baggage with him and is a top flight, mature young man who should provide leadership and leave a fine example for others to emulate. He is just the kind of young man that universities crave to have commit to them during the recruiting process. The situation of playing for UL may be attractive for him, but I would bet that by the time his eligibility is over, UL will be the bigger winner in the whole process, and many others with Mr. Granier's qualities will be more likely to cast their lots with the Ragin Cajuns!
Will Granier have 4 years or 3?
