The SU band sound was OK, but if you really want to hear a better sound then hope the Troy band makes the trip at the end of the season. This is what the POA should be shooting for.

To take it up several notches to hear excellent sound and musicianship along with seeing an almost flawless marching exhibition by a ticket to the "Drums Across Cajun Field" DCI event next July. It will be the third year here and suffice to say the performances that have happened at the previous two DCI events were the best dang show by a band at Cajun Field.

Or better yet, go to the Louisiana Showcase of Marching Bands this November. It's an all day event but if you show up after 3:00 P.M. you will see outstanding high school marching bands from around the State. For some of these band members, to go to a college marching band is a step down. Lafayette Music sponsors the event and donates much of the proceeds from the ticket sales to the Pride of Acadiana for scholarships and other things that just might help our band get bigger and better.

Finally, whether you like it or not, to the average band member, it's not about the football game, it's about the pregame and halftime show. _

Well, then I got news for the band. People are not at the game to watch the band. We purposely get up to use the restroom or grab a beverage or talk to the hated ex at halftime to not have to sit there are listen to the band. The events you mentioned to me in the previous post have no meaning to me nor interest whatsoever. If you ask me, there is no comparison between the SU band and our band. I could care less what critics say about marching styles and cadences because they mean nothing to me. What I do know is that not one person got out of their seat to watch them perform and that includes you. What I do know is they rocked the house and got a standing ovation while everybody had to run to the bathroom while our band was playing. I also know that I was more turned on to the game when the SU band chimed in and made it more entertaining while our band was talking to themselves. The name of the game is entertainment. We are at a football game, not a band competition. The band is there to arouse excitement and keep the spirits up of the team and crowd. They have to take a backseat, at this time, to the football team and understand that it doesn't matter how well you march or how technically sound you play, at least not during the game. People want excitement and would much rather hear the band over the rap music piped in through the P.A. system because you could hear a pin drop in the stadium. However, the band is not obviously getting it done as we do have to listen to rap music.

While what Helmut says may be technically correct, here's the difference between the Southern band and every other band I've ever seen at Cajun Field.

They were all about havin fun...and makin sure the fans had fun.

    And it worked.

Period. End of sentence. Case closed.

    Spot on BOP.

You have been to numerous stadiums and probably have witnessed a bunch of bands and the traditions that come with a band at a football game. With that being said, I am almost positive our band does not really add to the atmosphere of Cajun football outside of the pregame.

SU's performance was good, great even, but nobody still messes with the cal's video game performance. Hands down, greatest band performance I've ever seen. then I saw their ska show (complete with a skankin mosh pit right in the middle of the field), and they became legendary to me that day.

If you haven't seen those 2 shows, here they are, check em out,

Guess it's a matter of preference, but I think Southern's show was much more exciting to watch...

Take that with a grain of salt though, because it's coming from someone that drinks frozen margaritas :-)

Well, as someone who grew up playing video games my entire life, the video game montage of Tetris, Mario, Mortal Kombat and Zelda just mesmerized me. The ska show, is just personal preference, I've been a punk kid since I was about 13, and watching full a band play some of my favorite ska songs was incredible.

I really don't want to sound negative or degrade anyone who is in the POA because I know that they work hard and are good musicians. But as has been stated by almost everyone, if the POA does not change their style, song choices and what they are currently doing, then most fans will simply continue to use halftime as a time to go to the bathroom, get something to drink and wait to return to their seat just in time for the second half kickoff!!!

If the POA's style is what is considered "in style" for competition, I say save it for the competition!!! But when it comes to football games, play football music and play football style.

However, if the POA is set on continuing with their current "style" they need to add at least another 100 playing members so that we can hear what they are playing. Any new members must play a brass instrument for more sound!!!! Sorry, but additional clarinet, flute and sax players should not be allowed to apply. The POA also doesn't need any more flag bearers and I think only 1 Drum Major is sufficient to lead this orchastra!!!!!!!!!!!
The other 2 drum majors need to put their lips on an instrument!!!!

P.S. Did anyone notice the Southern band warming up prior to their show? Most bands tend to warm up their lips, etc... The Southern band was STRETCHING so they didn't pull any muscles!!!!!!!!!! Southern probably had as many atheletes in their band as they did on their football team!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
