Quit Hating! I know that you feel offended and under-appreciated, but Southern's band is the best Show Band in all the Land. No collegiate band can come even close to competing with The Jukebox regardless of how flawed you think their execution was.
Your comments make you seem petty and jealous because 41,000 fans liked Southerns halftime show better than the PoA.
No comment made on raginpagin has been derogatory to any member of the PoA. All comments have been pointed criticism directed to game time performance and the apparent clueless BAND DIRECTOR.
Cajun fans want a band like Troy has. The PoA can become a powerful, technical band like Troy without much of a change.
Again quit hating on Southern!
It means exactly how cajun4life describe it....hate. In other words this much hate (jealousy) can't be healthy
Greatest. Marching band. Ever
It's amazing how absolutely ____ed some of you get when somebody from LSU A&M mentions UL in an negative sense, but then you go out of your way to tell the kids in the UL band how much they suck.
No. It seems like the dude resents the band being held responsible for the near coma-like atmosphere of a UL game. And the fact the rank-and-file UL fan is abandoning the band because "they don't sound like Southern" deoesn't help either.
Southern is good at the kind of show they put on. Loud contemporary music, usually in block formation, with straight lines moving up and down the field. Go back and check; there are no arcs in their show. There is the occasional illusion there is one but that is because they are moving from one straight line to another.
UL doesn't play that kind of show.
And you are not going to get kids from local high schools to perform this kind of music. The only local band that comes remotely close is St. Martinville JUNIOR High, not even Senior High.
DISCLAIMER (that you can flame away on, if you like) I've been going blind for years so I can't go to UL games and enjoy them like I use to (God Bless you, Jay Walker), but I was there when the only thing UL "fans" said at basketball games was, "Marty you suck". I was there with 14000 of my closet friends to see Brian Mitchell's farewell performance. Not 25,000. Not 20,000. But 14000. Been at football games and basketball games when the loudest thing in the arena was the people behind me telling me to shut up and sit down. Basketball fans were so impotent and lame, the only thing that would stimulate a cheer was a 3 point dunk.
And from what I understand of the game Saturday, UL fans didn't go to the concession stand when the UL band began to play; they went back into the parking lot to tailgate some more. Friend of mine who was there was surprised at how many people didn't come back after half time. So much for the game, huh? The Southern fans stayed to watch the game, though.
Question: What's the difference between a UL game and a funeral?
Answer: There's only one dead person at the funeral.
And by the way, after Brian Mitchell's last game when I sent a letter to the Daily Advertiser chastizing local fans for not going and suggesting UL might have been able to compete with LSU A&M, and the phone calls threatenting me started (from LSU people), I could take it. I'm sure your comments won't be as bad.
I am not flaming, merely stating facts. Cajunbander is hating on Southern's band because they were not as technically sound as the PoA. But the general fan could care less what the actual music sounds like. Fans want a loud flashy show during a football game. If this were a band competition then playing in key and musicianship comes into play, but it was a football game and the fact is our band would be ranked lower than our actual football team if they had band rankings.
PoA may be precise in all phases of their execution and marching, but they still do not add to the game time atmosphere.
Go take a look at at the comments on the YouTube video of our show. Look at what the SU band is saying about us. That's hating. All I've done is point out facts. Feet weren't on time, tone could have been better, etc.
From YouTube:
"tell em' again bear, obviously he has no clue into what it takes to be part of the jukebox......that trumpet player he's referring to playing that solo.....he ____in sucks, are you ____in kiddin me, if that's ya'lls top musician (trumpet player) i feel sorry for ya'lls program...that dude wouldn't even make 3rd trumpet at SU.......and was he trying to scream at the end of his solo.....he could have kept that ____"
That's hate. What I don't understand, is that y'all obviously entertained the crowd more than we did. Why does this _______ have to come and rub it in? That's classless.
Well first let me say that I'm not a band geek but I do enjoyed and appreciate all the hard work our kids put in the achieve what they have nationally and to continue a long tradition.
As for what going on at youtube it seems to me that this person is responding to someone.
As for somebody rubbing it in I don't have a clue as to what you're talking about but I think it was a UL supporter that started this thread so maybe you should speak with them about your feelings.
Comments after the fact by bloggers shrouded in anonymity are meaningless, thanks for hanging in here and speaking candidly with us about this subject, as I am sure it is a challenge to do so.
Bottom line here is this...
UL's Marching Band is offering valet parking, steak tartare, and Oregon's finest Pinot Noir to a crowd that's hunting for the best cheeseburger in town. As much as I love a fine Oregon Pinot, a good cheeseburger's still a cheeseburger at the end of a day, and there is an art to those as well!
Southern has spent a great deal of time and effort perfecting their cheeseburger!
I personally prefer the marching style of the UL Ragin Cajun Band, and I think they did a fine job. I just wish there were more people in the band and a good part of that being brass.
The SU band was very good at what they do, but what impressed me most was how enormous their sound was and how much it added to the atmosphere of the game.
Uh, no, you're stating opinion. Cajunbander is making observations about the Southern performance, which, if you go back and review the actual show, are probably accurate.
The observations made about the POA are basically this: "I don't like their style of show." Nothing based in fact. Only opinion.
The "hate" being visited on this board is toward the POA. Basically, this thread is about why the POA can't be as good as, or just like, the Southern band. Apples and oranges. And don't get angry with the band people and imply they are snobs when they point out the difference.
But the thread actually boils down to this: UL "fans" looking from someone else to blame for the death knell that falls over Cajun Field with the opening kick of a football game or at the Cajundome with the opening tap of a basketball game.
Baseball/softball get passes - they have actual fans who realize that watching their chosen team is a contact sport.
Exactly, It's totally different. The SU band is stuck in the 60's. They would not come close to placing at Louisiana Showcase for HIGH SCHOOL marching bands. Unfortunately, people that do not follow marching bands are clueless to what are the current trends. This as freely admitted by Zephyr in a previous post by him.
If it was all about going to a football game to be entertained, then if the Cajuns go 0-12 but the games are close and entertaining then it would be OK with everybody on this board. It's all about competition and trying to progress and move forward. In football and band.
