Thread: New Softball Facility Coming

  1. UL Softball New Softball Facility Coming

I read the thread with baseball improvements and one response was

"Also they will spend about 3Mill on the softball facilities. New stand etc. The existing stand will be placed in center field. Sold out attendance will be 2600 +/- ..."

Is this true? How'd they get the money? Did they make each player's parent take up a second job and donate all income? (Being sarcastic, female sports get the short end). I hope the facility gets an upgrade. They've earned it. While they're at it take the current name: Alfred and Helen Lamson Ragin' Cajuns Softball Park (that's 8 words) and shorten it to LAMSON PARK, easy! This community and state can't even decide on what to call our Univerisy much less a softball park...it's wayyyy to long.

In a nutshell, over a year ago a UL Alumni that played baseball in the 80's offered several million to the University to build a new baseball stadium. Since then, evidently, the plan has developed into renevating both boys & girls facilities. I have no inside information, this is just what I gather. There are a lot of us hoping to get more information.

i thought it had something to do with NCAA regulations, or maybe university policy, that a portion of a donation has to benefit a womens sport. since the donation was so large, the softball team gets a portion for facility upgrades. which they deserve!!!! as much goodwill as that team creates for the school, they need better facilities to compete on the recruiting trail.

Surely this isn't right? Please, someone who knows tell me it isn't so.

I heard Nelson Schexnayder talk about this once. Due to Title 9 equal funding has to be provided to men and women's. That is why softball fundraising has to keep up with baseball fundraising. It would not surprise me that they had to raise funds to upgrade softball to keep up with baseball.

A new baseball park across Congress from the Cajun Dome and a move to Lady of Lourdes park for the Softball team would be an equal value upgrade.

UL Softball certainly deserves a move to a more visable location, with better parking.

I would then convert Lamson Park into a Research Center in exchange for the research land across Congress.

Or use the land where Lamson Park is now for a new first class student fitness center. The weight room at Bougerouis is crazy bad.

If we get the old Lourdes Hospital---we can put the monorail starting at Cajun Field and run by the frat and sorority houses---go down to Blackham and left to Lourdes go to Johnson(I know it is Louisiana Avenue Turbine) and to a staging area on the South end of Campus---My idea 25 years ago--Surely Charlie Boy can get us some of Obama's free money!!!!!

Leave the current ladies field, and build a massive new grandstand for the ladies. Take down the current baseball and Tennis facility and put parking right there for softball. Move the tennis teams to........ well, let's just take down the old tennis complex!

What many people do not know is that Mr. Lamsen put a state of the art drainage system in for the ladies. The field is first class; it is the grand stand that looks division II.

Some of you might be engineers. Could the current bleacher type stands at Lamsen Park be given to local high schools? I think they are the style that can be taken apart.
