Yes, in hindsight it was the best decision, but no one including us, could have predicted that the SBC would become very strong. If so, then we need to keep whatever voodoo witch who gave us that advice a big pay raise.
Nonetheless, when the Florida twins, UNT, MTSU & WKU all left the league 12 or so years ago, it was the best move at the time and no one would have argued about it. There's a reason why our fan base were all upset and to be honest, was likely a big factor in Scott Farmer's career as an AD. Let's not forget that.
If those schools who left had known that staying in the SBC would have best decision forward, then I'm sure they wouldn't have left.
We need to move forward as a university and athletics department and based on reading every post in this thread, it's been mentioned several times (myself included) that a change in University leadership is needed...and could happen soon (rumors)? We've done excellent in focusing on building the 'Now', but it's time to start focusing on the 'Future'. The SBC is strong now, but it's one big G6 shift away from being at the bottom again. Babe Ruth said "Never let the fear of striking out, keep you from playing the game"...it's understandable to be fearful of failure, but we all have to get over that.
'This is the Titanic stupid."
'This is the stupid Titanic.'
One builds confidence, one builds doubt.
All the rest of schools in the Sunbelt are picking a quote.
Look what happened to the Florida twins. FAU went to the AAC. FIU went to CUSA. Are we doomed to FIU status to be shared with ULM and LA Tech?
I listened to a Texas State spokesman on College Football - Serius XM radio yesterday and he was talking about how things are exploding there as a result of their move to the PAC. The entire perception of Texas State changed overnight, internally and externally.
UL could pursue a shot at the PAC when they expand beyond 8. Tulane was crap until they had one great season and beat USC in a bowl game, then they became the latest best expansion candidate. If UL has that kind of season this year, our name will be floated around as well. If we wait until Tulane, Memphis, UNT and UTSA can escape the huge penalty clause to exit the AAC and join the PAC, it will be too late for UL. Since that won't happened for a few years, UL needs to take advantage and elevate its stature. We are Carnegie R1, but our window to the world is football. We need to parlay both to a higher conference and status.
What is the valuation of the entire media deal? I'm still waiting for the magic number.
This entire process reminds me of how the AAC filled in after losing programs. Remember North Texas, very similar to Texas St. in size but with more success in football and basketball at the time. All we heard was how they will bring the Dallas market with them and what a great move it was for them. Fast forward to today, no one cares about North Texas and their media deal was less than the legacy members.
Interesting you brought up FIU and FAU, both joined for the same reasons. FAU has made the most of their presence in the AAC, but no one cares about FIU for the most part. The market provides airports and yet the (U) Miami still owns the market. The difference in these two scenarios is the travel cost hasn't killed either program in cost because the remain the Southern Footprint.
Texas St will be flying every spring sport to the West Coast and Boise Idaho. Now let's see if they accepted a media share less than OSU and WASt.
