The reality is that when your kid goes off to college... even if they don't smoke pot now.. there's a high probability that they will at some point while in college. But if you go to a Colorado school... and you absolutely swear on your life you'll never ever smoke pot... you're a liar. You will smoke pot in college in Colorado... or you will not fit in... so there really wasn't much of a point in you selecting a Colorado school to begin with.

My original post was about kids who do already smoke and i promise you there are just as many that do than don’t...probably more that do in urban areas than ones who don’t. It would be silly to not choose a Colorado school based on you might do something you’ve never done.

Lived in both places. As much as I love this city, Fort Collins is awesome.

It is not silly. Federal studies indicate that pot use in Colorado is increasing significantly among the 12-17 year old population since legalization. You can expect to have it in your face in every social setting in Colorado campus life. That's significantly different than having it acceptable in moderate social circles in other colleges.

I know. I've visited Fort Collins. I used to work with several Colorado State engineers. They were all cowboy-ish. Smart guys. But very farm/ranch minded guys. And they were very conservative politically.

We will agree to disagree, if someone will fold to peer pressure and do something they “don’t want to” they will fold anywhere. A young man that is a senior in high school who hasn’t done it yet has already said no hundreds of times.

I'm with Policarp. If there were half as much parenting going on these days as Policarp is doing, this world would be a much better place for all. I'd much prefer my son to go to school at a place and town where pot use is not legally accepted than where it is, period.

I'm not in blatant disagreement with you. But every young person hasn't made all of their life choices in high school. I know many of my friends children that changed drastically over the course of their college life. And many new lifestyle choices came into play during that period of time. To suggest that a Colorado campus... and the culture surrounding legalized pot... isn't going to operate differently on most college students attending Colorado schools... just isn't reality.

And no... every place you go does not "fold you" the same. We are all substantially... whether we agree or not... affected by "peer pressure". And you can drastically alter your life by choosing the wrong or the right peer group. And using pot or alcohol is not just a matter of yes or no. The lifestyle surrounding it's use... those you use it with... and the quantity and frequency of use... play a much larger role in the overall affect it has on your life.

Just because you can find some of just about everything on every college campus... does not mean all college campus life is the same. Send your son or daughter to Evergreen College for a couple of semesters... and then have them come home over a holiday break. What you believe is the core values of your child... will be radically different. And I could care less what your son or daughter claims before they attend Evergreen. You will need 20 years... along with 4 clinical psychologists... and a wire brush to get the stink off your kid.
