I thought you Cajuns were experts on baseball.
The ump should never ever call the runner safe if he has not touched the base or plate. The ump should simply stand there. It's his way of saying that the play has not been completed.
On the LSU play, the LSU runner obviously DID NOT touch first. But, the ump still erroneously called him safe. Now, what if the second baseman had retrieved the ball and tagged the runner out? Is the ump going to change his call from safe to out? All he*l would have broken out.
This leads me to believe that the ump thought he touched the base and "finalized" the play by calling him safe.
If the ump knew that the runner did not touch first and he still called him safe, with the open option that the 2nd baseman could still tag him out, then that ump should be fired on the spot.
