Oh, we are in absolute agreement about the incorrect call. We just don't need some idiot fro LTU-R to discuss it here. We can do just fine without them. JS

Most safe & out calls are judgment calls by the umpire and most of them are fairly simple and clear cut to everyone. However, the very close bang, bang calls are sometimes debatable and occasionally missed.

In this case being discussed, the collision at first base added an additional element to the call that may have briefly blocked or distorted the umpires view of the play. I can't speak for the umpire in this situation, but I can only assume he thought the runner had touched the base since he ruled him safe. As was shown on the replay, the runner appears to have possibly missed the base. However, if the umpire thought he saw the runner touch the base and judged him to be safe, that is the end of the story and the runner is safe.

How many times do we see coaches come out to "discuss" safe/out calls at first base? When was the last time anyone saw the call (even if wrong) reversed after the "discussion? It doesn't happen. Sometimes umpires miss calls and make mistakes. In some cases the call can be reversed and in some cases it can't. In this case, once the safe call was made, that was the end of it.

It is easy to see some errors with the benefit of instant replay and the use of slow motion. However, the umpire doesn't have the benefit of that technology and has to make the call as he sees it right then and there. Some plays are not as easy to call on the field as it is from our living room recliners.

Just seems most of the mistakes favor P5 teams in all sports. Strange?

agreed, but a. I also asked about the fielder and b. simply asked if the coach came out, I didn't see game and this entire event seems to be have stricken from most media accounts of the game. wasn't trying to say he should or shouldn't come out to "discuss" I was simply just curious if he did.

I don't recall seeing the coach come out to "discuss" the safe call.

I know that some P5 umps get fed steak and lobster. And some G5 umps get baloney sandwiches.
Thanks for everyone responding to my question on that call.

I won't say that there aren't bad officials out there, but it's also strange that officiating is never an issue when the good guys play well.
