eta: it is the responsibility of the second baseman to grab the ball and go touch first base, or tag the runner. the second baseman never did that.

eta 2: im glad it didnt have an impact on the outcome of the game and that coastal was able to hold on. LSU needs to lose everytime they step on the field.

I always understood that the umpire should watch the base and see exactly when the runner's foot touches the base. At the same time you listen for the ball to hit the glove. I would like to hear from a real umpire( which I am not) if he should call safe without ever touching the base.

im saying he was safe in regards to a tag being applied. the ball flew out of the glove, therefore he was safe because no tag was applied. i do realize he didnt touch the bag, but he went back to the bag after he got up and the second baseman went and grabbed the ball and walked back over without tagging him or touching the bag with the ball in his glove.

Had blue not blown the call he'd have bee tagged out by that second baseman as he was not attempting to do anything except wiggle like a worm cut in half.

I would say the timing of the safe call was correct, but the call itself was wrong because fielder made the out. On a force play the ball does not have to be held as long as on a tag play or a catch of a fly ball. Voluntary release is not required in this instance

I don't think the safe call was correct at all.

The fielder didn't have possession of the ball. The batter-runner never touched first base. The umpire just should have stood there until one or the other happened.

The safe sign was given because the ball was jarred loose from the fielder. That was wrong. Umpire totally missed the fact the batter runner never touched first.

This was a force play, therefore fielder not required to tag the batter-runner

I thought you Cajuns were experts on baseball.

The ump should never ever call the runner safe if he has not touched the base or plate. The ump should simply stand there. It's his way of saying that the play has not been completed.

On the LSU play, the LSU runner obviously DID NOT touch first. But, the ump still erroneously called him safe. Now, what if the second baseman had retrieved the ball and tagged the runner out? Is the ump going to change his call from safe to out? All he*l would have broken out.

This leads me to believe that the ump thought he touched the base and "finalized" the play by calling him safe.

If the ump knew that the runner did not touch first and he still called him safe, with the open option that the 2nd baseman could still tag him out, then that ump should be fired on the spot.

In that scenario the tag would be an appeal and hopefully result in an out. But it is unclear if time was called due to the injury or possible injury. Bigger problem was a fielder dropping ball after a force is irrelevant. Also lswho runner didnt appear to be in his running lane

I just got finished watching the whole ninth inning again. What is truly remarkable to me is how much ccu was up against it defensively: after the possums tied it up it was bases loaded with only one out. And with over 10K screaming tiggers, they kept their calm and worked their way out of it. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but there were two homers in particular behind home plate trying to distract the pitcher...making stupid signals, throwing with a limp wrist, etc. But he kept his cool, K'd one with some really great pitching, than got the next guy to fly out. Fantastic thing to see......setting themselves up for the walk off win. Very nice indeed.
I had turned off the volume last night cause I couldn't deal with the possum fans.....so it was extra sweet to go back today and watch it again with the volume on this time. So many drooping possum hats and fans, lol.
