Thread: Louisiana

  1. Default Re: Louisiana

The key word or trigger word is "University" stay away from that word and you can call yourself what you want . . . as long as it is good for the school.

    We ARE... "UL"! _
    Or "Louisiana".

It seems pretty simple but never is.....

Here is what the law states:

"The use of the two-letter University of Louisiana abbreviation, "UL", and/or "U of L" are prohibited by the university or any of its affiliated organizations (alumni associateions, development foundations, bookstores, etc.). For academic, public relations, athletic, as well as other purposes not specified, the use of the University of Louisiana abbreviation must always include the abbreviation for the municipal location of the institution. For example, ULR is appropriate for University of Louisiana at Rayne."

Notice that this applies to Athletics as well, which is why Farmer said so. I have to believe using Louisiana is a circumvention of that law. So, why Louisiana's Ragin Cajuns? I think it goes back a long ways when we were USL and trying to use it. At that time, we couldn't use Louisiana because that was not our name. It carried over and was sort of grandfathered in. Now, as we look at the law, it seems pointless to continue to use it and it looks rediculous anyway.

In trying to find a resolution to all of this, perhaps you are correct in using Louisiana and "L". The law requires the "at Lafayette" when using the University of Louisiana or UL. If we use Louisiana only and if we use an "L", we have not violated that law and don't appear to have to use "Lafayette". I am talking about uniforms and signage and stadiums, etc. We can still refer to ourselves as UL, but otherwise use "L" along with Louisiana. Since LU seems so repulsive to most people, this might be a better solution. The key would be in finding the right "L" to use. The one you use is not bad. I would like to see other options. _

Here are some sample caps I created to give an idea of what Louisiana and "L" might look like. You already saw the UL sticker I created on this thread.

Not bad. Only suggestion would be not to use Comic Sans as the font. If we were to market "Louisiana" and "L" then we would need our own font that is unique, like when you see a decal for Florida. You know they are talking about the University of Florida because they have the same font everywhere and no one else does. I guess we have the one that we use now for numbers.

Good suggestion, but I didn't have access to those fonts. I used what appeared to be the best of what was available. I see CajunCanaille used that font on the L he created, so how does one access that same font? Let's get creative and come up with some ideas on use of Louisiana and "L". Like Boomer, I too prefer the UL. The question is, if UL legally requires adding Lafayette as does the "University of", "UL" and "U of L", and athletics continues to abide by that per Farmer (and probably Dr. S), how many years do we want to continue this name battle? We may be OK in Lafayette, but outside of it we are UL L. Use of Louisiana and "L" just might solve that problem NOW. We can still call us UL, but our official gear would say Louisiana and "L", with or without Ragin Cajuns. Just something to think about.

I love all 4 designs. I think L is the way to go.

I thought there was a rule that lafayette had to be listed somewhere on the uni's. I'm not complaining, but Are we getting away with something?.. I'm not sure whether UL will ever be known as Louisiana nationally, but they are heading in the right direction.. _
How about everyone who posts on this website use L or Louisiana instead of UL?

My email to both Dronet and Farmer were regarding the use of"Lafayette," "L" and "LU" and it basically asked "who are we?" I never received a response from Dronet (and I'm not suprised). I did received a response from Farmer and it went as follows:

    Interesting thought!

I still believe, for the time being, we should concentrate on Ragin’ Cajuns. That name is as unique as our culture and nobody else in the world calls themselves the Ragin’ Cajuns.

Honestly all I did was take the number 7 that someone posted on this site and flipped it upside down.
