Thread: Louisiana

    Default Louisiana

Wow, the Sunbelt home page now calls us Louisiana. Seems like every sports broadcast I've heard recently (besides lsu) Is now calling UL (Louisiana).. I think Louisiana without lafayette is catching on BIG time. To me, the uniforms with just "louisiana" on the front is a big plus. I thought there was a rule that lafayette had to be listed somewhere on the uni's. I'm not complaining, but Are we getting away with something?.. I'm not sure whether UL will ever be known as Louisiana nationally, but they are heading in the right direction..

The way it was explained to me, I could be wrong, but The University (acadimically) has to use UL-Lafayette. But our sports teams can go by UL. Such as LSU A&M BR, Alabama at Tuscaloosa, Tennessee at Knoxville, etc.. I don't think we are getting away with anything at all. Lots of universities do it therefore I don't know what the problem would be for us doing it. At least that's my understanding. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Lafayette is generally on all of the jerseys somewhere...just not in a very visable place. I remember seeing a picture of the baseball jersey's earlier in the year and it was right under the pepper on the sleeve.

I think they may all have it, just not for all to see it.

I have a black UL polo, and on the sleeve is "Lafayette" embroidered in black.

It's pointless because it's invisible, but it leads me to believe they "had" to put it there.

I may be wrong, but why else would they do it?

You should go over to the ULM board. They saw Phil Steele's publication referring to us as Louisiana, then the SBC did the same for the baseball tournament, our uniforms, our fields and everything else we are doing to capture the name. They are hemorraging. Many on their board have written to the State to force us to use UL L and Louisiana Lafayette and are suggesting come of their alumni attorneys file legal action against us. Pretty sad actually. They have a great acronym in ULM, but aren't satisfied with that. They want to take us down. Instead of trying to take us down, they should proceed like UCLA does with Cal (Berkeley) or UNLV does with Nevada (Reno) or UTEP does with Texas (Austin). All coexist very nicely with no identity problems whatsoever. In fact, last time I looked, UCLA is right up there academically with Cal and in the same conference and UNLV is actually in a better conference than Nevada. Of course, ULM doesn't see it that way, at least the posters on their board do not. Whether or not the university President chooses to pursue this is another matter.

There has been ongoing efforts by our AD and SID to get this accomplished. I can assure you guys that official letters have been sent to the Sun Belt office on more then one occasion. During the Sun Belt Conference, we again expressed our desire to be called "Louisiana " and they replied. There is still work to be done, but this has slowly moved in the right direction.

I'm not sure that is the case. You will note that it refers to "academic, public relations, athletic, as well as other purposes not specified ...". We can continue to push the envelope, but we may be playing with a loaded gun. Why risk it? If we don't use athletically "University of" before Louisiana or "UL", are we violating the law. If we use only Louisiana and LU, it doesn't appear we have violated anything.

Here is what the law states:

"The use of the two-letter University of Louisiana abbreviation, "UL", and/or "U of L" are prohibited by the university or any of its affiliated organizations (alumni associateions, development foundations, bookstores, etc.). For academic, public relations, athletic, as well as other purposes not specified, the use of the University of Louisiana abbreviation must always include the abbreviation for the municipal location of the institution. For example, ULR is appropriate for University of Louisiana at Rayne."

The football jersey and the softball jerseys do not have Lafayette ANYWHERE on them. Yes, the baseball jersey has Lafayette under the pepper, and I pray to GOD that they will eventually get rid of BOTH!!
