We may all be thanking Deggs after this move if our pitching improves and we are hosting a regional next year. The dude was too young. We should have waited to hire him. It was a USL hire.
Let’s bookmark this comment. Ostrander cancelled his remaining interviews immediately after Gunner took the meeting. He has two standing offers from minor league clubs and also was being courted by Missouri.
Seems like everyone outside of Lafayette has a very favorable opinion of his abilities.
I think gunner is a good coach and will be a great one, but he is going be an assistant under Ostrander, not THE pitching coach. He will be the pitching coach there about like every pitching coach robe had. I do hope he finds his way back here one day and if going learn from another great is what he has to do then so be it.
How much is he making there?
Eh, honestly who cares.. Southern Miss gave Caleb Stelly almost as much as we raised for the entire baseball program.
We are closer to McNeese than we are to some of our conference mates
I made my account specifically for this topic. I am very close to this situation. Gunner never interviewed with anyone except Os and once they met it was pretty much a done deal. Os wants to take on a more CEO role and mold him with in the meantime to take over pitching completely once he’s ready. If you believe that this is good for the program, or that Deggs is okay with his 29 year old up and coming pitching coach going to the conference winner/rival - I have some bad news for you - it is not. Vibes are horrific inside the buiding, AD hates the optics, and they’re scrambling for a viable replacement. Don’t forget about the boosters who already didn’t like what they were seeing and are continuously hit up for more money. Speaking of more money, SM gave gunner a substantial raise and a bigger NIL budget (by a mile) even when they didn’t need to. They just wanted him that bad. My Hattiesburg buddies told me Os didn’t want him to leave the building after the interview. I have no doubts he will be a star and hopefully a future HC at this program to continue what 36 built this place on.
I’ll leave with this, for any of you guys on here who have watched “The Office”, Deggs is the college baseball version of Michael Scott. Watch his moves, the way he speaks to the media, or his decision making through that lens and it will all start to clear up.
