Deggs is the head coach. It’s his job to make decisions for the betterment of the program. Should he keep an assistant around who he’s not comfortable with because he was a great player? Again, if Gunner wasn’t a Cajuns legend, I think most people would be applauding a change.
BJ joined the staff for one season with the potential for maybe 2 or more. He did this to honor Robe. After 1 season with Deggs he had enough of Deggs and elected to not return. So yeah his attitude/coaching style ran BJ off. No he didn't get "fired" ran off as a volunteer coach. This isn't made up.
The disrespect and dislike on this board for a coach (that everybody wanted to be the HC here, many prior to Robe’s death) who took over a program that was in the crapper and has been in regionals 3 of the last 4 years is mind boggling.
To each his own I guess.
I am a Matt Deggs guy, and I’ve said that time and time again. This isn’t personal. But a 27-31 record along with losing key players (Stelly), your pitching coach, and 2 recruits to your main conference baseball rival is a bad look. I understand the fans’ concern and frustration especially when you are trying to raise money for NIL, fundraise $6 million for a new clubhouse, and $2 million for a new scoreboard. This coaching staff needs to fix this and fast.
That same Robe family that wanted Deggs hired for this program, right? I like Gunner Leger, and I believe he did what is best for his career. It may be that Deggs doesn't turn this program back in the right direction, but Leger has the right to leave on his terms. I have no problem with that decision, but I do hate he ended up at Southern Miss.
