Look at Texas Southern a few years back. Went on the road OOC and played nothing but power conference teams, actually won a few. Luckily for them they won the conference because at large wasn’t a possibility. You can only do so much if your league doesn’t buy in over many years.
As fun as that would be it’s not possible. Learfield requires us to have a certain number of home games. Contrary to popular belief among many on this board, Marlin does have good connections and is well liked in the coaching community. But money is the main factor in scheduling and out of his and maggards control. Nobody wants to play here. That’s a fact.
One example is LSU didn’t play one true road game before conference play. Most P5’s don’t play on the road. Our pickings for home games are very slim. UNO doesn’t want to play us anymore. Mcneese either. SFA and another school I can’t remember straight up said no to a multi year home and home. I think mid majors would rather go make money at the big boy schools instead of helping each other out like we should. I really don’t know why it is like that. There’s really no reason why we shouldn’t be playing same year home and homes with Texas schools.
You realize who our state school is right? The only time they will play us is in a secret scrimmage. I have heard that the relationship will get better under their new coach but I seriously doubt they will ever come to the dome. Not sure how south Alabama has gotten auburn and Alabama in back to back years. That is certainly not the norm for mid majors. You guys have the connections to ask the questions to the right people. I only know what I’ve heard from a few insiders and all they have told me is that schools straight up refuse to play us. Especially at our gym.
South Alabama played 2 for 1’s to get high profile teams to come to their place.
