With all due respect, your expectations are just not good enough. There's nothing wrong with 4th on rare occasions. This is the SBC expectations should be top two. But that's my view.
I’d never hire a guy who consistently finishes 4th or worse.

Would you hire a guy with the resume that the Big Fish has? Nope ya wouldn't yet he's finished 4th often in the league.
If we wouldn’t hire him, why on God’s earth would we retain and give him raises and extensions?
Chew on this a little while: we had 4 conference losses to teams with RPI worse than 200. If we win all 4, we are the undisputed #1 seed, win 3 of 4 and we are at worst a 2 seed. I certainly don't think it is too much to ask to be undefeated vs the dregs of Division 1.
I found this:
So, in the last 6 years the Cajuns have made it to the conference tournament championship game one time. In 2014 the Cajuns beat the Panthers in OT and Bryant Mbamalu was the MVP. The Cajuns have never made it back to the conference finals since then. In 2018 they lost to UTA in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, GAST has won the tournament 3 times in the last 5 years. They have been in the finals 4 times in the last 6 years.
I believe Bob Marlin said he wanted to compete for championships. You cannot compete for the championship if you do not make it to the finals.

Well maybe that was before this week. No UTA fired their guy for finishing 4th too often. There’s probably no consistentancy with teams between 2-4. Just a guess, it’s not worth researching.
