And btw, those that think a coaching change is impossible at the end of this season... couldn't be more wrong.

This defense is truly an anomaly. Just about all of the guys starting on defense played significant minutes or started on a nationally ranked defense last year. The DL has been terrible but all of these guys were involved and/or started last year. It's easy to point to the LB'ers as the reason and they are a part of it as losing Peters and Lightfoot is not an easy task but all of these guys in the front 7 are literally losing every one on one battle in the running game. Guys are getting pancaked and pushed around and that doesn't allow you to make plays. I think we are simply running way too much base defense up front. We have no DL movement, few blitzes and when we do blitz, its always in a 3rd and long situation which is obvious. HUD stated he wanted to run more base stuff this week because the guys were inconsistent in the scheme last week but they simply were outmatched and couldn't win the battles. Its one or the other. You either go more base but have to be able to win those matchups (we can't) or you employ a more attacking system.
Yes....When you are at the bottom of FBS, like we were, and you rise to about midway, like we did, and then you fall back to the bottom, like we are. That's when the realization hits that while it looked like we were on our way to be a relevant football program, that quickly turned and we need to try again.
The coaches didn't forget how to coach but the personnel on the defense was there last year to when we had a highly rated defense. I think its the scheme. We have to attack the line of scrimmage more on defense. We have to stunt and blitz more...Period. This defense is not good enough to win the battles up front and play base. We will have to take more chances and attack more.
I'm not understanding your post fully but if you are asking me if I think we need to attack, my absolute answer is yes. aTm next week is the same thing. A run first team who has a young QB starting and I think we need to attack the LOS and make him beat you in the passing game. If he starts doing that, you adjust but we need to show that they can't just beat us by running the ball altogether but we are in for a long season by running base 3-4.
It's a damn shame. I'm starting to really like this offense. I also thought Lucas was a positive addition to our defensive staff. Giving this defense the "Otha Excuse" doesn't cut it with me. People are supposed to love playing defense and wreaking havoc. We don't wreak havoc. If Havoc were an opponent ball carrier... he would have just run past our defense as I write this... for another touchdown. Again... with this offense shaping up... it's a damn shame.
