Maybe this can be a lesson learned. No head football coach has ever left here for another college head coaching job. Let Dr. M construct all future contracts with that in mind. Jmo
Yes....When you are at the bottom of FBS, like we were, and you rise to about midway, like we did, and then you fall back to the bottom, like we are. That's when the realization hits that while it looked like we were on our way to be a relevant football program, that quickly turned and we need to try again.

That misses one thing, you still have to find someone or a combination of folks to write the check. That is likely around 2 million dollars. In this economy, no one will do that. Therefore, I think threads like this are pointless and accomplish nothing other than helping people vent. Having said all this does not mean I think we are getting our money's worth. We should have better results as our staff is one of the most highly compensated in our league. Finally, I don't think the defensive staff forgot how to coach and they were fairly successful a year ago. I conclude the talent on that side of the ball is fairly lacking and I question how much they can improve. That is a shame as our offense is vastly improved. Their future is bright as almost that entire unit returns next season. Can reinforcements be brought in to help the defense will tell the tale on next year. At this stage we will just have to outscore people to have any success in 2017.
The coaches didn't forget how to coach but the personnel on the defense was there last year to when we had a highly rated defense. I think its the scheme. We have to attack the line of scrimmage more on defense. We have to stunt and blitz more...Period. This defense is not good enough to win the battles up front and play base. We will have to take more chances and attack more.

The picture is simpler (or at least I hope so) with no institutional interference. Players, coaching staff, an adjunct fundraising organization to get resources.
Unless things change during the season, like our defense is brought back from the dead, then I think you are right on the money. No pun intended

I'm not understanding your post fully but if you are asking me if I think we need to attack, my absolute answer is yes. aTm next week is the same thing. A run first team who has a young QB starting and I think we need to attack the LOS and make him beat you in the passing game. If he starts doing that, you adjust but we need to show that they can't just beat us by running the ball altogether but we are in for a long season by running base 3-4.

Yes. I'm agreeing with ya . Vic Eumont's defence back in the day was one blitz happy bunch. It produced also and made the most of the talent we had.

Gotcha, didn't know that name. It's obvious to me that this defense will have to take some chances to make plays. We aren't going to do it by winning matchups on a consistent basis.

It's a damn shame. I'm starting to really like this offense. I also thought Lucas was a positive addition to our defensive staff. Giving this defense the "Otha Excuse" doesn't cut it with me. People are supposed to love playing defense and wreaking havoc. We don't wreak havoc. If Havoc were an opponent ball carrier... he would have just run past our defense as I write this... for another touchdown. Again... with this offense shaping up... it's a damn shame.

A third losing season in a row should be met with a pink slip. Most in the coaching profession understand that.

By the way, venting is a very good use of this forum. I understand that well. God knows we needed to after yesterday.

Guys, it's not just after one game. After two games, we've seen a semi-decent special teams; a really good offense, and a defense that can't stop a cold. Forget about the passing defense. If we can't contain the run, we will lose.

It is not a balanced discussion if the title of a thread leads with a decision proclamation.

I am worried about Hud meddling with the defense, and I say this based on phrases Lucas going into the season -that he didn't use last year- but Hud has used in the past.

That does not mean I am ready to fire.

Hud's team recruited our current backs.
