I hope these guys are the real deal. I would much rather see local guys on the field. At least they will put people in the stands. If these two recruits are going to turn our defense around, I am all for it. If not, stay in our own backyard and put butts in the seats!
Seriously, you think there is this groundswell for local kids? Mom, dad, sister uncles maybe, say 6 per student per game. 85 x 6 x 6 = 3060 per year. That is if every single kid were local. And since that would be the case we would be 0-12 and there would be 60,000 no shows.
As somebody who does not live in Lafayette, or the surrounding area, and log thousands of miles a year to see the Cajuns I am certainly in favor of getting the best athletes in Louisiana when they are equal to ability, and have the grades to be there. But to try and tie that to attendance, you make the university look NAIA, way too local, way to provincial.
Coach is bringing in the best "qualified" players he can get. His $300,000.00 job depends on that. It would also be sweet if the university accepted the NCAA standards for incoming players instead of a higher one. Perhaps there are reasons that more locals are not picked than simply athletic ability.
I'm not getting in arguments here, but I do recall the McNeese game last year where a local boy from Erath, who was dying to come here, came in and beat us on our own turf. My co-worker in the office right next to me, along with others, attended that game for the sole reason of a local guy playing in town. I'm not saying to sacrifice ability for local players. We have some tremendous athletes in the Acadiana area. Let's take advantage of that and get the attendance that goes along with it.
That local boy from Erath was NOT the reason we lost to McNeese. Quite honestly, he didn't live up to all of the hype I'd been hearing about him. IMHO. I think the "local boy" hoopla is way overblown. We DO have lots of kids from Acadiana on our roster. We don't have room to take every local kid who wants to play college ball. Sometimes we miss on a kid. Sometimes we already have the numbers at that position, and don't have a slot available. Sometimes the kid just doesn't qualify or is marginal academically. Look at LA Tech's recruiting roster this year: nearly all are from Texas. ULM has a large chunk of their class from Miss. (and a huge number are JC's). And Tulane, well, they're Tulane. Even LSU has a significant number of out-of -staters. Their last 2 QB's were not from LA. You think they are crying for more locals?
For the record: I am for getting the best athete (.)
However your equation leads to expediential growth. When you create fans they adopt programs and don't drop completely off the map when their favorite son is gone. Example: Greg Hodges family have been to several games since his UL career ended.
