If we manage to beat POR, I hope we push hard for a win vs. Germany. Avoiding Belguim and playing Russia/Korea instead could mean the difference between going to the quarterfinals and going home.

Not sure why Americans act like the Sweet 16 is the ultimate - as if we're a mid-major. I guess we are, but still.

Everyone that's got a voice in world futbol has said that if Americans get out of this group, it's a huge accomplishment. Now, of course I want to advance, but Dempsey and Besler could use time off, and getting J Greene on the pitch is something Jurgen desperately wants to do. I'd like to see Wondo get a shot as well. The question really what's better: a fresh, 100% US squad against a more stiff opponent or a battered squad against a weaker one?

Either way, we have to win Sunday.

It's not just an American thing. The fact is only 8 or so teams have a decent shot at winning a World Cup. The other 24 would love to win it too, but most will be setting more realistic goals.

It would be a huge accomplishment for us to make it out of such a difficult group, just like it is a huge accomplishment to make it to Omaha. Both are worth celebrating.
