Thread: Redskins Football Will Soon Be No More ... Cajuns listed

The NCAA is the reason they caved. According to the PC crowd, the words or names "Braves"...or even something as seemingly generic as "Warriors" was/is considered offensive. Well...I think to belittle someone by calling him a "cornhusker" is offensive. And I don't care that Florida State got the Seminole Nation's permission. I think "the Seminoles" is offensive. And while I'm at it, I think using "Texans" is offensive to all the Mexican immigrants who live there. Oh...I almost forgot...the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, Iowa Hawkeyes (offending the blind), Oklahoma Sooners (for those who only recently have moved there) are ALL offensive terms and MUST be changed. And don't get me started on how offensive it is to PETA that we humans who think we're just better than animals get to use their names without regard for their feelings.

Not at all. Just don't use the color of a peoples skin as a reference point. They are the Fighting Irish not the white skinned Fighting Irish. The white skin Ragin Cajuns would be racist. If you want to get really PC, the stadium in Baton Rouge is an insult to dead people.

Right but...someone will take offense to it some where. Whereas, using anthropomorphic animals doing zany human tricks...no one could ever be offended. The Phoenix Suns have a gorilla who dunks basketballs for ____s sake...and no one says anything!!

Finally, just as with moanroe's attempts to stop our use of Louisiana, how will the end of the use of Redskins by thus team better the plight of American Indians? Will living conditions on reservations improve? Will the high rate of alcoholism among Indians on reservations go down? Will the literacy rate increase? It just seams that there are a lot of much more serious issues facing American Indians.
Of course you wouldn't see this as a problem. Fox news says you shouldn't

So...why didn't Costas make his speech last year? Or the year before? Or 4 years ago? Redskins just became offensive since the summer?

Tell that to the 'Fighting Sioux' of the University of N. Dakota. I may be off on a few points, but the University is located in a State named after the Dakota Sioux, has an enrollment of Sioux students that is either majority or very large plurality, is located either on or very near a large Sioux reservation, offers a degree or at least numerous courses in the history and culture of the Sioux nation and has written endorsement from several Sioux tribal governments. The NCAA forced them to change. To the eternal credit of the University and the State of North Dakota, they are now officially the UND Athletic Teams, with NO nickname, Moniker or Mascot.

If people want to refer to my Native American heritage, I would prefer 'Choctaw', or 'Indian', but, as others have pointed out, certain tribal groups used red pigments in warpaint, and the term 'Redskin' [the equivalent in their language of course] was used to denote those going into battle with the enemies of the people. The term is considered derogatory by people not of the race, and by those in the race not familiar with its origins. In general, by everyone who thinks the term was invented by white folks to deride native Americans.
