Well then the term Native American is also a misnomer. There are no Native Americans, no Euro Americans, we, the human race is OUT OF AFRICA. Now there is DNA evidence suggests that some of the oldest American immigrants came from France. Their DNA are mixed with the more prolific Asian Americans immigrants now being termed Native Americans.

They either were wiped out or died out and some of the survivors were absorbed into the Asian immigrants.

Mistake or not Indians is a lot loftier sounding than Native American so homogenized, so pasteurized, so boring. Little kids playing cowboys and native americans. Yea that sounds like fun.

All the kids I grew up with always wanted to be the indians. Lots of great war cries, cool weapons like tomahawks, bows and arrows, lances vs a cap pistols.

Not everything old is wrong, not everything new is right. There is no universal agreement on the origin of the term red skins, but there is empirical evidence of an indian chief very early on referring to themselves as red skins.

Not everyone buys the out of Africa theory. It is the most accepted theory and can be found in every textbook across America. I have a lot of questions about it especially if you completely buy evolution.

As far as the use Indian to reference Native Americans, I think it is something that needs to be corrected. That's me and you have a different opinion. That's fine and I highly doubt I will change your mind. It is a five hundred year old mistake. I'm close to a lady of Indian heritage. She is 100% Indian but born in London and has only been to India once for a vacation. She has told me of some really horrible stories of racism growing up in London. She was shocked to find a sort of racism in India with natives towards foreign Indians. Take away the brown skin and she is as British as Prince William. I'm going to have to ask her if they hyphenate names in Britain. Is she an Indian - British? She takes no offense by Americans misusing the term Indian. This is starting to get into realms that I don't think anyone intended.

My personal opinion is the use of the term Indian is misused in a generic way. Nobody should have been forced to change their names. They picked those nicknames to honor the local tribes. Using a tribal name was always meant to be an honor and I suspect this all started as someone mentioned as a money grab. I do see a problem with Redskins.

If I would have been the President of ULM at the time, I would have messed with the NCAA and kept the Indian but changed the mascot. The could have had Raj the Pharmacist!

If I recall correctly even with the endorsements there was one tribe that railed against their use of Sioux. That was enough for the institution located in Indiana

also, the Cajuns have a "for us, by us" mentality with ragin cajuns. It wasn't appropriated by a bunch of Anglo wanna be's. We named ourselves so i don't see a mutiny rising up
