i wouldnt mind the catahoula....no offense, as long as it doesnt look like that third representation. we are not trying to be the catahoulas, we are still the ragin cajuns. my best example would be the dog that roams the sidelines of the tennessee volunteers.

Problem is even amongst their breed the Catahoula are so different from one another they are like Tigers and Lions. Only an expert can identify them with any consistency.

As far as dogs in general go I don't know if this is still true but dogs historically have been the most used mascot. Which is why I find sort of funny when I hear one use of a gator used as a reason not to use BullGator.

    Geaux Cajuns

The Best would be a Cajun Man as the WEst Virginia Mountaineer!!!! Comes out before the games and gets the crowd involved---Young, handsome, dressed in Cajun clothes of old---no need for the white boots!!!!!

Hi Ragingayle... the reason a crawfish was rejected in the past... is that a crawfish runs/swims backwards. The metaphor used commonly when someone is afraid of a challenge or backing up from a confrontation... is that they are "crawfishing". And, even with all of the other common slang around mud bug, boiling, peeling, sucking the head, pinching the tale, etc... it's just not a good sports representative. The gator probably would have been an excellent choice a long time ago, but with the Florida Gators being known so well, it wouldn't work IMO.

Personally, I think we just stay with the Ragin Cajuns and leave all other symbology, animals, insects, vegetables, etc out of the mix. If anything, I wouldn't mind us having a pet Catahoula (or two) just to have a really cool Louisiana indigenous dog running around our facilities at sporting events.

I live in Baton Rouge... and we are best known for politicians and poor air quality. I tried to get LSU to go with the "LSU Gagging Maggots"... but they told me that when you don't have much of a cultural indentity and you have a lot of imbedded unredeeming metropolitan features... you are better off creating a diversion. They chose the Bengal Tiger... indigenous to India... so that they could take their minds off of the reality that is Baton Rouge.

A Spirit Leader is supposed to be a crowd pleaser, not an identity maker, although you do want one that fits and has no negatives.

It would be the same as a school removing yellow as a primary color just b/c of its negative meaning decades ago. Bring on the crawfish!!! "does the crawfish while typing" lol
Crawfish are prey. I do not want my spirit leader to be prey.

Back to Turb. Nobody will know what a BullGator is. Just saying you got to keep it simple. Of course currently you have the Swamp People and some North Shore Red Necks all trying to get their tags filled, but how long is that show going to last.

Spirit leader should represent the University of Louisiana. It should not be viewed as a Cajun icon if we want to be viewed as a state wide school. It should be the state dog, bird, or reptile. The dog is mans best friend and will be loved by the fans. I don't know I guess you could get a few eight inch gators for the kids to touch. Some dude running around in chinos, and a checked shirt the common dress of the poor when the Cajun came over does not excite me.
