The method used to get there may not be available going forward.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A bill to regulate college sports introduced in the House on Thursday would offer limited antitrust protection for the NCAA, while barring schools from using student fees to pay for college athletic programs.

Co-sponsors of the SCORE Act includes seven Republicans and two Democrats, which gives the bill a fair chance of passage in the House. It would need at least seven Democratic votes in the Senate, where its chances are viewed as slim.

The bill includes the three elements the NCAA has lobbied for: antitrust protections, pre-emption of state laws that regulate name, image, likeness payments, and a section that prevents athletes from becoming employees of their schools.

The bill’s main goal is to set national standards for NIL payments that are dominating the industry in the wake of the approval of a $2.78 billion lawsuit settlement that allows schools to pay athletes.

It also includes a section that purports to protect Olympic programs that some see as threatened because of increased funding that will go to football and basketball. That part calls on schools with at least one coach who earns more than $250,000 to offer at least 16 sports programs. That language mirrors a rule already in effect for NCAA’s top-tier FBS schools.
    What happened with this Bill????

Bankrupt? 5% of budget. About to clear annual budget concerns. Plan announced soon for going forward. If anything, our overreach in athletics was main issue. Not meeting SACS and Carnegie rqmts. Now, what we do in future for athletics I have no idea. All wanting big time athletics need to be prepared to pay for it. We are not in that game. We are increasing our donations to some functions at UL that will receive less support but we believe in. Such as Vets program. And KRVS. Sad to see what’s coming but the G5 or whatever got played and we are seeing the consequences.
And Happy Thanksgiving to one and all.

I don't disagree but to think they could accomplish any goal by staying put was/is insanity.

Just the appearance of "trying" to make moves would have generated millions.

Don’t worry, JMU is just an over inflated Louisiana Tech. Big boys will slap them down. JMU fans collectively has spent a lot of time on the SBC board throwing ULM under the bus. They need to stop. That’s UL’s job!
I like his 24 team conference realignment scenario, except replace WKU with Louisiana. I could live with that.

With my limited knowledge, but this is the way the University needs to do to move forward!

If UL wants to reposition itself for a better conference, it has to confront the reality that athletics is currently losing money due to budget cuts and shrinking resources. That financial strain makes it harder to retain athletes, upgrade facilities, and show the kind of competitiveness that bigger conferences demand. The solution is to lean into NIL as the bridge between limited institutional budgets and the need for athletic growth. By organizing a Cajun-focused NIL collective, tapping alumni pride, and building partnerships with local businesses, UL can create a new revenue stream that directly supports athletes without relying solely on the university’s budget. At the same time, UL should leverage its R1 research status and academic credibility to show conferences that it brings more than just athletics it brings prestige and market expansion into Louisiana. The combination of grassroots NIL fundraising, community driven sponsorships, and academic strength positions UL as a program that can stabilize its athletic finances and prove it belongs in a stronger league. In short, NIL is the path to offsetting budget cuts, keeping athletes in Lafayette, and making UL an attractive candidate for conference realignment.

But we are there. Hopefully easier to maintain than to rise up to it.
