Thread: HABEMVS PAPAM

  1. #1

    Default HABEMVS PAPAM

Robert Prevost, an American cardinal, was elected pope Thursday, taking the name Leo XIV. He is the first American to lead the Catholic Church. Cheers erupted as he stepped onto a balcony overlooking St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican to address the crowd that had gathered and more than a billion Catholics around the world.

The “Latin Yankee,” as he is known in Rome, worked 20 years in Peru’s poorest enclave — falling so in love with the country that he became a naturalized citizen. His commitment there echoes the legacy of Pope Francis, an Argentine who became the Catholic Church’s first leader from South America.

I looked up his biography, he's from Chicago, but the name 'Prevost' struck me as possibly Cajun. His father is part French, served in WWII... I couldn't find out if he has any ties to Louisiana.

There was a Prevost family that had a new car dealerships in Baton Rouge years ago.

I thought I heard that he was a close friend of Pope Francis and a progressive. I hope that is not correct. The church will be further divided if he keeps with Pope Francis' progressive changes.

Everyone is for progress... until it happens, right?

He is for the poor and disenfranchised; that is considered by some today to be woke. I read that he is not a supporter of gay marriage, which should please many conservatives.

He's the first American Pope, am I correct on that?

Time magazine in a breakdown of potential candidates said that Italians called him "The least American of the Americans". Not sure how to decipher that, but I doubt it's a compliment to Americans.

He has been openly critical of Vance and Trump. He's never criticized someone on the Left. He was one of Francis' closest allies in the Vatican.

The Vatican is going broke. Donations from America, which fuel the Church, have dropped dramatically since Francis. This was a financial move. It is going to fail because he will follow in the footsteps of Francis. Plus, he has sex crime baggage.

The pick here should have been Cardinal Sarah.

Something to think about: if you're in Europe and you drive 8 hours, you're likely to go through 3 or more different countries, all with different languages, customs, and governments.

Drive 8 hours in the US, you can't even get across Texas.

We only have two bordering nations. One is culturally almost indistinguishable from us. As for the other, many Americans think everything from the Rio Grande to Tierra del Fuego is Taco Bell.

I would remind you that most GIs first encountered Italian food in WWII. It was occasionally included in their K-rations (and I believe that's where Chef Boyardee started... bleh).

    Also, a joke.

What do you call someone who speaks 3 or more languages?

    A polyglot.

What do you call someone who speaks 2 languages?

    Bilingual.

What do you call someone who speaks only 1 language?

    American.

I could go on. But for these reasons, despite our huge immigrant population, we are not all that international in our outlook. We do not typically understand, and are therefore not always that comfortable with, different cultures and viewpoints.

From my travels, I suspect that is what they mean. An American with an international outlook is not the norm.

The new Pope, although born in the US, is a Peruvian citizen. That's a tad unusual.

Progressive when it comes to immigration & the poor. Social media is going crazy on both sides. Half are saying he's Anti-Trump and the other half are saying he's conservative and voted for Trump. Nobody knows

Have you seen the recent polls? He's not exactly the odd man out on that point.

He's never criticized someone on the Left.
Can you really stand here and say that definitively? Have you covered his nearly 50 years of speeches, homilies, interviews, and other writings?

He was one of Francis' closest allies in the Vatican.
Whoa! Good thing there is no precedent for consorting with different kinds of people... like, say, publicans and sinners.

Plus, he has sex crime baggage.
    True dat.

    Pax vobiscum.
