    "Papa" in Spanish is both masculine and feminine, depending on context.

    If referring to the Pope it is El Papa; if referring to the root crop it is la papa.

    Hence: las papas fritas = the fried potatoes

    El Papa nuevo = the new Pope.

    I've heard Pope Francis called the first American Pope.
