I looked up his biography, he's from Chicago, but the name 'Prevost' struck me as possibly Cajun. His father is part French, served in WWII... I couldn't find out if he has any ties to Louisiana.

It was just reported on local news (WWL, New Orleans) that Robert Prevost's paternal(?) Grandparents are Creole, and traced to the 7th Ward of New Orleans.

Time magazine in a breakdown of potential candidates said that Italians called him "The least American of the Americans". Not sure how to decipher that, but I doubt it's a compliment to Americans.

The Pope’s daddy is from Mansura (Avoyelles Parish). The Prevost’s are one of the original families that founded Mansura. The dad’s name is Louis Prevost. He was a WWII veteran. When he returned from service, he moved to Chicago for work, settled there and raised a family.

He is for the poor and disenfranchised; that is considered by some today to be woke. I read that he is not a supporter of gay marriage, which should please many conservatives.

The fact that he is not in favor of gay marriage should make all Catholics happy. It is in the church doctrine.

Something to think about: if you're in Europe and you drive 8 hours, you're likely to go through 3 or more different countries, all with different languages, customs, and governments.

Drive 8 hours in the US, you can't even get across Texas.

We only have two bordering nations. One is culturally almost indistinguishable from us. As for the other, many Americans think everything from the Rio Grande to Tierra del Fuego is Taco Bell.

I would remind you that most GIs first encountered Italian food in WWII. It was occasionally included in their K-rations (and I believe that's where Chef Boyardee started... bleh).

A polyglot.

Bilingual.

What do you call someone who speaks only 1 language?

American.

I could go on. But for these reasons, despite our huge immigrant population, we are not all that international in our outlook. We do not typically understand, and are therefore not always that comfortable with, different cultures and viewpoints.

From my travels, I suspect that is what they mean. An American with an international outlook is not the norm.

The new Pope, although born in the US, is a Peruvian citizen. That's a tad unusual.

And we are and always be the envy of the world.

American politics infects everything in all facets of life now. Even as the new Catholic Pope is picked people are already drawing lines in the sand.
