Look at chu with the photoshop skills! Why am I taking the criticism arrows when you seem capable of designing things too?? Where have you been haha. I’m joking. I don’t mind. It’s creating more conversations.
A green gator was never on the table. Green would clash too much with the school’s colors and then it’d really look like Florida then. Plus, gators aren’t really green. They’re black to a darkish blue. They get covered in algae a lot so they can have a greenish tint.
A red gator was ruled out because most of UL’s primary form of displaying imagery is on a red background. When you think about the stacked Ragin’ Cajuns logo, you probably think of the white letter version of it. That version works best for the school because they want the primary worn color to be vermilion. Having a red stack Ragin Cajuns on top of a red background wouldn’t provide enough contrast to be pleasing to the eye. That same principle is applied to Al being white. It looks way better to have a red shirt with white UL letters and a white mascot, than white letters and a red mascot that would blend in with the background.
I don’t have the market firm name or clout, but I know what I was doing in this design. I presented a 10 page document that was primarily images to introduce Al. But I could also present a 30-50 page document on the long term vision for Albineax, possible room for alterations, branding ideas, along with in game skits. That document would be for a board that would vote and decide if my research and vision is suffice. Most people on social media aren’t going to read a 30 page document though. They’re going to see the first image, and decide right then and there what their stance is.
I am an experienced artist. I have put in hours of research and planning to determine Al is the best spirit leader for university moving forward. If I walked into a room with Maggard, Savoie, Saloom today, I have no doubts I could pitch Al and make a very convincing argument.
People have talked about Big Red on here. WKU fans do love him. Big Red was first pitched by a student. Then, after approval, worked hard to win people over. You can image the push back they received when a big red blob was announced as the mascot. But they believed in the long term vision, and liked that he came from one of their own.
All Al would need is one season to start winning over the naysayers.
I hope you don't take any of the negative criticism you see on social media to heart. The easiest thing to do in life is be a critic, made even easier with social media. Critics aren't doers and aren't pushing the issue. Thanks for your passion, initiative, and the lively discussion you brought to our community.
Yes! My father got me one when we went to a New Orleans Buccaneers game at the old Loyola Field House. Wish I still had it!!
As for the Catahoula Hound, I get the idea of it being unique for a mascot, but it won't push the Brand the way a Gator will!!!
