Are you thinking about going to Florida too?

Remember Tony talking about select baseball? Kids don't have to sit the bench or earn their spot. They don't switch positions because the roster isn't big enough.

Add to that, some of these kids have never been told "no." They get everything they want and if there's an issue with a teacher or coach, the parent works to get the teacher or coach fired. We've seen that a lot the last few years in our high schools.

By his own admission, Matt is a tough guy to play for. There's going to be adversity and he's going to be the cause of some of it. But this business of "he made me change positions and I can't get comfortable"..well, we don't tolerate excuses from coaches and shouldn't tolerate them from players either.

The guys who aren't here any more either didn't fit or weren't 100% committed. Period.

In case any of you were unaware, Matt coached similarly when he was at Sam Houston. All he did was win three championships and become the first Southland school ever to win a regional.

His biggest problem for some fans here is he isn't Robe.
And he wasn't well received early on at Sam Houston either because he pushed a lot of players out, but got results after he changed the culture.

He took over a SHSU program that had just went 43-19 and to it’s 3rd consecutive regional. They were coached by David Pierce who currently has the Texas Longhorns ranked number #1, slightly different situations and wasn’t much culture changed needed.

And yet he did change the culture and the roster. And a lot of players and parents were angry. The ones that remained were pretty happy eventually though.

Bobby's mother called Deggs and after a long discussion Deggs decided to invite him back and Bobby has apparently been a model citizen since.

Deggs is about second chance kids. He thrives on that because of his own personal situation i would imagine. If he considered giving Bobby a second chance AND the kid has done everything he has been asked to do i am perfectly fine with that. Im sure all of us would take back a poor decision or two we have made at 22 years old. And if this makes Bobby a better man in life im all for it. Good for both of them for working this out. Sometimes a kid needs to be grabbed by the shirt collar to open his eyes big enough to see the real picture and then they GET it

There are plenty of programs around the country that are finding success doing just that.

It’s still early. 2022 has its own story to tell. But patterns are developing in year 3 that can’t be ignored.
I will be shocked if Deggs adjusts much, maybe Seth can help in that regard. Deggs reminds me of Bob Knight, in that he is very certain in what he is doing and how he wants it done. He isn't nearly as good of a coach as Knight, but has very similar qualities. When the success stopped, it all came tumbling down.

The pool of kids (and parents) that want to be coached hard is dwindling fast, so the available talent to recruit here and build a quality team is small. I really want Coach Deggs to succeed, but it is going to be very difficult long term, IMO.

I’m not here to interject much into the conversation. People have their opinions and I’m not going to waste too much of my time trying to change anyone’s mind. I would just like to pin this thread and revisit in a couple of years. My prediction (and this is just my opinion…again not here to debate), this conversation will sound much different after a super regional appearance or two
