We are talking about filling shoes that are impossible to fill and the next person is going to have a very hard time being judged fairly. This makes me think this person is going to be a transitional coach simply filling a gap before the next coach can take the helm with more of a clean slate.

I know this is hardly comparable but after Pope John Paul II it was thought that the next Pope was never going to be revered in the way John Paul II was. So basically Pope Benedict more or less filled the gap creating a buffer before Francis arrived. More or less to take the church into the future without it being overly influenced by it's past.

The next coach will be the best option as a coach that we can hire. Period. Expectations will be high. It will be tough. It will be different. It will be odd. It will be a lot of things. But we are not hiring someone “just to stand in for the time being”.

I may be wrong, but I don't feel that way at all. First, students athletes don't begin class until August, about a month away. Dr Maggard doesn't need a coach in place until then. There is time to methodically due his job, in addition to assuring his present staff and student athletes that he will do what is in their best interest balanced against doing what is in the best interest of the program. In this case, that will possibly mean keeping several coaches including Bab and Wells on staff because they recruited this group and have familiarity with the program top to bottom.

My gut feeling is that Bab and Wells will remain to help the transition in some capacity on the staff and major changes will be made after the season. JMO

I believe Dr. Maggard will make the right hire. I could give you pros and cons of every candidate. But it's his decision.

Every hire he's made has come somewhat out of left field. There may be a name that hasn't been discussed that he's considering.

Wish I knew more. The man plays it close to the vest. Which is okay.

....Like a new boss/manager/owner coming into a situation, a new head coach can change the programs current coaches and bring out a latent talent in them.....so the new guy talks to former staff members where he may have coached and really checks out any red flags......I remember when my brother was checked out before his FBI career (lots of people were asked and lots of questions were involved)......hypo——-I have a great pitching, hitting, and extra coach that I KNOW are great and that I can work with——-how do I weigh that against some loved guys on the present staff???

I’m gonna go out on a limb Boomer. The only person currently, on staff, with enough history to be loved is Bab, so some “sounds” a bit too broad.

Same here. Given the circumstances I think that is needed. If you don't do that there is considerable risk that current athletes have a difficult time adjusting (right or wrong) and now your problems are compounded.

With all due respect, you couldn't be further off base. The next hire will be the man to lead us into the future. This won't be some stop-gap hire, the off-season just started. This is the clean slate.

With that being said, don't be surprised if we have a new head coach within the next 2 weeks. I have heard things are moving quickly. Just a hunch that it'll be sooner rather than later.

Yes, I’ve heard similar things as well. I would think sometime early-August.
