The 2014 team might be one of, if not, the greatest college baseball teams to not make it to Omaha.

I don’t think it would be realistic to just expect another 2014-type season like it’s a dime a dozen; but I think what we saw in 2016 is more of a realistic expectation. That year, we started the season a little slower than expected, but then we put it in hyperdrive come conference play. And we were able to win enough games in the conference tournament to put us over the top with our RPI and helping us get a host regional spot. Plus, our season ended in the last game of the regional at the hands of the eventual national runner-up.

I think the 2016 season is a type of season that we can strive for and realistically achieve.

Sorry that some of us analyze the game a bit differently than you. If you look at offense, we have DECLINED every single year since 2014. We maintained success for a couple years because the pitching staff that we had those 2 years (Gunner, Marks, Guillory, Harris, D-MO) won games for us. After 2014 our run production dropped over 25%. Today, it's just short of a 50% drop over time and we don't have anything close to the same staff.

Last year, we had close to 50% less extra base hits with more strikeouts than 2014. You usually trade MORE extra base hits for strikeouts.

That's why you see us flirting with a below .500 record. Can't explain this any more clearly. Many of us saw this coming regardless of the flashes in 2015 and 2016.

No one is expecting 2014 every year. What we do expect is the valley to gradually rise each time. We shouldn't be dropping to 2012 levels again.

Reasonable decline after 14 was inevitable.

Sustained decline should not be immutable.

I am sure this will be one -- But but reason this team is under 500 is because Gunner is not in the starting rotation now!

2000 South Carolina is the greatest team to not make it to Omaha (thanks in large part to gonads the size of beach balls).

2015 and 2016 might have been Tony's best coaching jobs. We lost a lot of talent off of the 2014 team, but the foundation was laid for the roster to continue the success. The last time the 2015 team was under .500 was when they lost game 1 to Bama to fall to 4-5. They fell to 15-13 with a loss to Georgia Southern and then went 14-2 over the next 16 games. Lost game 1 of the SBC tourney and came back from the losers bracket to win it all. That team had grit and determination.

2016 was a combination of a great schedule (#1 OOC SOS) and a solid record, coupled with a regular season and conference tournament title, to help propel us to a host spot. That 2016 team lost 19 games in the regular season. 2019 team has lost that many already.

2016 is what we should strive for. We didn't even hit 40 wins until the SBC tournament. We didn't have to sweat out whether we would make a regional. We had to sweat out whether we would host or not.

And our new hitting coach has our offense trending upwards. If we had just a normal Tony pitching staff this year we would have 10 more wins. Our bullpen collapsing has been a huge issue. When if and how it will get fixed is yet to be seen. We are leading or near the top of conference in nearly every offensive category. This is the weakest pitching staff I can ever remember under Tony.
