Making a Regional is a successful year and it doesn't matter how you get there.

    100% agree.

However, on a separate note is this team the best team this year with an under 500 record?

IN 2016 WE HOSTED A REGIONAL. That wasn't based on four days in May.

Of course there was a decline after 2014. We may not see 2014 again.

    Geez Louise..................
Reasonable decline after 14 was inevitable.

Sustained decline should not be immutable.

I don't think it will be.

Today, it's just short of a 50% drop over time and we don't have anything close to the same staff.

Last year, we had close to 50% less extra base hits with more strikeouts than 2014. You usually trade MORE extra base hits for strikeouts.

That's why you see us flirting with a below .500 record. Can't explain this any more clearly. Many of us saw this coming regardless of the flashes in 2015 and 2016.

No one is expecting 2014 every year. What we do expect is the valley to gradually rise each time. We shouldn't be dropping to 2012 levels again.
    Great Post.

I cannot wait for the replies on this from the Bar-B-cue bunch!

I am sure this will be one -- But but reason this team is under 500 is because Gunner is not in the starting rotation now!

I don't think it would be realistic to just expect another 2014-type season like it's a dime a dozen; but I think what we saw in 2016 is more of a realistic expectation. That year, we started the season a little slower than expected, but then we put it in hyperdrive come conference play. And we were able to win enough games in the conference tournament to put us over the top with our RPI and helping us get a host regional spot. Plus, our season ended in the last game of the regional at the hands of the eventual national runner-up.

I think the 2016 season is a type of season that we can strive for and realistically achieve.
2000 South Carolina is the greatest team to not make it to Omaha (thanks in large part to gonads the size of beach balls).

2015 and 2016 might have been Tony's best coaching jobs. We lost a lot of talent off of the 2014 team, but the foundation was laid for the roster to continue the success. The last time the 2015 team was under .500 was when they lost game 1 to Bama to fall to 4-5. They fell to 15-13 with a loss to Georgia Southern and then went 14-2 over the next 16 games. Lost game 1 of the SBC tourney and came back from the losers bracket to win it all. That team had grit and determination.

2016 was a combination of a great schedule (#1 OOC SOS) and a solid record, coupled with a regular season and conference tournament title, to help propel us to a host spot. That 2016 team lost 19 games in the regular season. 2019 team has lost that many already.

2016 is what we should strive for. We didn't even hit 40 wins until the SBC tournament. We didn't have to sweat out whether we would make a regional. We had to sweat out whether we would host or not.

And our new hitting coach has our offense trending upwards. If we had just a normal Tony pitching staff this year we would have 10 more wins. Our bullpen collapsing has been a huge issue. When if and how it will get fixed is yet to be seen. We are leading or near the top of conference in nearly every offensive category. This is the weakest pitching staff I can ever remember under Tony.

    Absolutely correct sir!

And Coastal proved the old adage a few years back, get hot at the right time and anything can happen. UCONN men's basketball also proved that a few years back. Heard talking heads speaking badly about that UCONN team this week, but they left with the trophy.

Dang, so JT cannot get all the blame now any longer. So who do we throw under the bus for the pitching staff???

Why does someone always need to be thrown under a bus? We have 8 pitchers that are either freshman or sophomores carrying the load, of the upper class-men we hopedvyo count on leger, Horton and Bradford are either done, not what we expected or battling injury. Sometimes ___ just doesn’t work. In 25 years it’s rarely been pitching

Well, apparently it was OK to throw JT under the bus. I read many many post on the site with fans doing this! So for what I gather it is ok to throw someone under the bus as long as this someone is not a buddy! Got it!

When I see the offense continue on that trend while Tony rebuilds the pitching staff, I'll feel the same way you do. We lose a lot of the current lineup this year and are depending on the JUCO to D-1 transitions to go smoothly. I'm not as optimistic as I have been in the past. I stated in a thread the other day, had the staffing changes made for this year been made 2 years ago, I'd be much more forgiving. Hearing excuses for 1-2 years is much different than 3-4.

Don't be mistaken, he is responsible for a lot of this. It's evident seeing the difference in players that both he and JW have coached. It just ultimately falls on Tony for not making the change sooner.
