Anyway, anyone's name can "surface". If you remember, Napier was thought to be a leading candidate for the Zona State job when Hud was shown the door. After the infamous "rock solid" post, believe it or not, a certain someone from admin felt bad enough for me to tell explain the situation from start to finish. Didn't happen until this year, but that person eventually did explain, with two others at the table, what I'm telling you guys here.

I always figure Heupel would have been top target but then UCF opened.

I can't argue because I can't support my argument without revealing names.
There was another coach with a verbal offer from our admin and a contract was being drafted. Saban called Maggard. The rest is history. Napier was not a target or a thought when Hudspeth was fired.

Not only was a contract being drafted, his plane was waiting on the tarmac. Napier was not the first choice and no one heard that from Maggard or anyone in the administration. I don't care what people are saying publicly now.

First choice and name not even in the hat or even in the radar are two different things. I don’t think Napier was the first choice or the guy all along. He was identified as a potential candidate early on, that’s all. I think when it was realized he wasn’t going to be the guy is when “the call” happened

I get he was on the short list that the huge donor had knowledge of at the time. I have no doubt if he is a major supporter he had knowledge of coaches on that list.

Brian Billy Napier was a name discussed on 12/06/17. Not as prime candidate, but highly regarded. That's the first time I'd heard his name. On that day Pry was still considered a possibility.

Not bothering to look back on hire public release. So maybe my memory of when it all came is off together as far as hire announced.
