I remember a lot of people hammering him for keeping Farmer around and the instances where the name issue was smothered in terms of dealing with ULM and their unwillingness to adhere. I will not proclaim him to be the savior of anything. Hopefully he just puts the right people in place and provides them the resources they need to guide us to higher levels of success.
Please trust me when I say, TJoe is absolutely the Savior of our athletic program. I was able to learn quite a bit about the Farmer situation after the fact and again, there were so many other things involved than just replacing him. On top of that, Savoie faces massive push back from inside of Martin Hall and the Foundation regarding athletics. There is even one individual that sits on our RCAF board who asked TJoe to “drop the name thing” because it was causing unrest amongst his buddies in BR.
You did not have to experience rock bottom of 08-09 when departments were making cuts so deep they refused to turn on the A/C for Friday afternoon spring finals. Having classes with a 100 person waiting list because they could on afford to have 1 section of it.
What Tjoe has been able to do in the last 10 years on both the athletic and academic side has been a miracle in this state.
With only 20% state subsidy, the university is just about funding itself. Get the State to donate all properties to UL in exchange for no longer funding. UL is then free to set it's own tuition and entrance standards. Once we are Carnegie R1 in 2020, we will have more clout to seek our own destiny.
