Hey Sid, where did you get those shots??
Hey Sid, where did you get those shots??
That photo brings memories of my last year on campus.
The original, Dupre Library....one story tall
Edith Garland Dupré.
Ms. Dupre was a member of the first faculty at Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (now, the University of Louisiana ... at Lafayette). She taught English and French, and oversaw the operation of the library.
I have spent many a research hour in Edith's inner rooms.
I saw a student strut his stuff in a streak in front of Edith's place in 1974.
Ms Dupre', after retirement, had a bookstore that she named Sans Souci. I can remember buying a few books there as a kid, and recall how diminutive she was, maybe just over 5 feet.
And when she drove her car, she could barely see over the steering wheel. The painting in the library must be close to life sized.
Sans souci= carefree or possibly worry free.
A cool video recently posted on youtube and FB: the first part features downtown, but it ends with a drive through campus. Other than stating it is in 1960's, it doesn't give a specific date. However, from the looks of it, it seems to be very early 1960's.
Oh, and it has a great soundtrack to boot.
