But Hammer, this is Louisiana. Don't you know that the university with the best football team is the de facto flagship of the UL system? Especially if that school is also called by a non-regional name, Like Louisiana or maybe Louisiana Tech?

Except for the "UL" [which the University has never requested] that is exactly what has been requested, and it is also exactly what has received approval from the UL System Board. So in that sense, it has already "flown". As to what appears in the media, what they call us on the Business page or the front page is entirely up to them and is constitutionally protected, as you well know; the University has made no request in that regard.

It's not a debate. I want the same thing you do but it won't happen by demand. You can't demand respect - which is what this is about - it has to be given. Threats don't work well when you have little or no stroke to back it up. I don't think the rest of the state outside of Baton Rouge cares much about this issue so maybe it makes sense not to go out of our way to alienate everyone else - Tulane, Tech, McNeese, ULM - needlessly.

Any name change will have to go through the legislature, right? The legislature is made up of mostly lawyers and the majority of them graduated from - wait for it - LSU. You see the problem. The only way to make this happen is to convince the purple and gold we're not a threat...which we're not. They will always have more legal stroke, more money and by association with the SEC, more prestige. Fine. We don't want what they have. Convince them.

That is the only way we will grow. You may prefer to live on your knees and try not to offend their fragile ego, but I would like to show them that we will not "know our place". Keep pushing and don't bow down to them. That is how you get respect!

I can even speak about this topic from my personal experiences. I work in Houma. When I came to work here a couple of years ago, most of the people here had never really seen a "radical" Ragin' Cajun. I did not hide my feeling about UBR (The University of Baton Rouge). This is what I call them in response to us being called Lafayette. A few UBR fans even took shots at UL and I did not lay down, but threw even more back in their faces about UBR. They respected that and now a few people here have come to games and even more talk about how they watch our games on TV. Fans can be won if we show them we have something to offer. The rest will follow in time.

UL has had their respect for decades, it is that respect for what has been achieved and respect for potential that has lead to the view of UL as a threat.

Showing that a rising tide raises all ships is the way to go, because respect without goal oriented results is a futile endeavor.

I bolded the part that I was talking about. Why is there a daily article in the news star about the name change if no one outside of baton rouge cares about the issue?

edit: I didn't want to spend the time writing what johnny said, but the statement about convincing them we aren't a threat is laughable as well.

"No one" is a figure of speech, the News Star has one activist and is attempting to make someone care. It will sell papers.

No, idiot was good. It seems to be the common term here for those who disagree with fanatics, which this topic produces daily. Okay, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe you can demand the rest of the world see it your way. Throw enough insults out there and you'll get that respect the band's been playing for 40 years.
