She looks so stressed. I'm sure she wanted to maintain the standard that had been set for the last 25 years, but I don't believe she knew what she was getting into. And sometimes, being an assistant coach is just a stepping stone to being the head coach, but sometimes, being the assistant coach is at best what you are. There is no denying she was probably the best assistant coach Alabama ever had. And there is no denying she gave 100% on every play as a player (softball, basketball, ....) and as an assistant coach, but only the coach gets praise or blame for how the team performs. She was not prepared for the shots she is getting from the media and fans.

To be a coach at a SEC school requires you to smile and coach. Recruiting is simple because you are in the SEC. The only schools you are competing against are other SEC schools and a few other upper tier programs across the country to recruit the top tier players. However, to be a coach at a "UL" requires 100 times more work and effort. You have to work for the players, (recruiting and keeping), the money, the schedule, the uniforms, the field, concessions.....you have to work your butt off. This takes a young coach with strive to succeed like no other.

I have always wish and wondered what it would be like for UL to be a top tier school in the country. We have had our moments in the spotlight and had a whiff of what it would be like, but never have maintained that level of superiority. But we always had the belief we could see those days in the future. But now it seems the future for "UL" schools is just so bleak. We can't compete with NIL programs. Our fans for the most part are fickle. The true Vermillion and White fans are here on the RP. But even those fans seem to be fading out. I get it, they are getting burnt out. Tired of all the excuses and the mountains we must jump over to be competitive in the NCAA, which only seems to cater to the have's and surely not the have nots.

So sorry for this rant, but back to my original thought. Coach Habetz looks stressed out to the breaking point and it would not surprise me if she steps down after this year.

Oh thanks. So sorry A. Didnt think bikers went to girls sports.
    B. Thought they leave the bandana in the helmet.
Thanks for the info, im happy to learn!

P.s. fun fact, remember when it was illegal to wear bandanas in both baseball and softball, good rule or bad rule, thoughts?

Also softball is the sport she played only at least the third most, maybe she should have coached the other sports instead

We wont know the whole story unless we know if maggard talked to murphy in the lead up to her hiring.
But RPCA didnt let us question Maggard back then, but maybe they will ask now

I consider myself to be a true Cajuns fan. I was a student for the end of the Lamar era, and have been a fan ever since, first in basketball, then football and softball. I can absolutely tell you that our coaching hires over that period have ranged from outstanding to putrid. When it comes to hiring head coaches who are "one of us", they have been outstanding [Charles Lancon], mediocre [Michael Desormeaux, Garry Brodhead], and absolutely horrendously putrid [Errol Rogers]. Habetz so far seems to fall in the gap between Brodhead/Desormeaux and Rogers.

We fans are not fading out; we are mostly aging out. I have joked that softball games at Lamson look like bingo night at the retirement home. I am 78 with a bad heart and failing kidneys, and I am in much better health than many other folks I see at Lamson.

I certainly can't speak for anyone but myself, but as for me, I am too damn old to deal with coaches who don't take winning seriously enough to look in the mirror and see what their own failings are that might be contributing to their teams poor performances. What I saw in this last press conference was a coach who blames everyone and every thing except herself for her team's play. She was like Bob Marlin, but with more angst.

She kept repeating "they" need to step it up; not once did she say anything like "I need to look at what I am doing or not doing to get the most out of our girls". As long as she keeps that attitude, we will not win.

What she should do is have two meetings; one with her coaches and one with her players.

She needs to leave her ego at the door, and ask just one question then really listen to the answers she gets. The one question? "What can I do differently that will make it easier for you to achieve excellence in your job?"

She might be surprised by what she hears.

How so? I realize you may not be responding to me, but I want to know what you saw that contradicts either Saint or me.

As much as many want to find a false reality as to why Louisiana can no longer compete as it has done before NIL, free transfers and total abolition of the once TOPs advantage - those are the real reasons why we find ourselves where we are today - it’s no different for football and coach DES - it’s time to put the pitch forks away and show support for our coaches and players if we WANT TO FOCUS ON SOMETHING THAT MAY MOVE THE NEEDLE.
