It will be interesting to see if things improve when Keller returns. The point guard by committee is not working at this stage. However, I see no one who is separating themselves to take on the role full time. Right now the Cajuns play with a fear of failure. They pass up open shots to end up with contested looks near the end of the shot clock. They do so due to not wanting to be the guy who misses the shot. A HS coach was sitting near me last night and agreed with this analysis. You can't play athletics in a scared mole and expect to be successful.
In Coach Q's defense, he is missing four guys he thought he would have when he was planning the season. Those include the best player on the team in point guard Jamyron Keller. I don't know how long he will be out but at this stage it may be best to shoot for the beginning of conference play for his return. Others are Karris Bilal, Sean Elkington, and Zeke Cook.
Bilal and Elkington may be out for the season from what I am hearing. Bilal could have been the backup point guard and Elkington would have probably been a starter as he is a big who can shoot. Cook would have helped on the glass and defensively.
None of that is an excuse for the product on the court now. It must improve quickly to be ready for conference play. Last night, with the game on the line, we were trying to get a walk on open for a game tying shot. That shows that the other guys need to step up their effort and execution.
I refuse to believe that Jackson State had the 2nd best defense Louisiana faced all year.
This pretty much sums up my thoughts as well. When I watched this roster get put together I thought it was a good start for laying down a foundation, or least as much of a foundation as you can have this day and age when a roster will have to be rebuilt every year. Felt like this would be a .500 team overall, maybe slightly above that in Sun Belt play.
The 12K talk had me rolling my eyes, especially taking it as far as renaming the rebounders club. Pretty embarrassing with the product we are seeing on the floor right now.
Still love this team and hope for the best coach White and all of the players that put Louisiana across their chest. I agree that the biggest hindrance right now is the loss of Keller and then Bilal on top of that, the only true PGs on the roster. Having combo guards run the offense full time is a tough task and it is showing.
There is zero patience in sports period. Coach K stunk at Duke first few years but eventually built it. Give the guy some years to get players in and establish a culture. Of course he is going to say things pre season to build excitement and raise money. I will give the guy time to get it done he has the blueprint from Sampson.
I'm like most of you, I'm very disappointed in what we've seen so far. But, the players he brought in certainly were a step or three above what we were seeing in the past few years. I still believe if we had a couple of experienced point guards for all of the games played so far, our record would be much better.
