There is nothing sacred about the July 7th date; now if August 7 rolls around and we still do not have coaches on staff, that could be a serious issue. Otherwise, it depends on your definition of "doomed".
Is the program going to spiral into the abyss and become the Louisiana Tech Women's Basketball of Softball? Probably not yet, but we are on that trajectory.
Are we going to fail to win the Conference Tournament and fail to get in the NCAA Tournament? Probably, unless an incredible number of things all happen.
In either of those cases, we will have dug ourselves into a hole from which we quite likely can not climb out, at least over the short term.
Did anyone ever think that a 22 player Roster may be all the Administration is allowing to Softball? They are cutting corners and maybe that's one of the corners. Also, did anyone ever think that the coaches Coach Habetz wants are "BUSY" this summer and haven't had time to come for a visit? There are many, many scenarios that could be preventing YOUR timelines from being full filled.
Maggard told the fans he will allowed Aly to have up to 25 players if she wanted. If you think with the returning players, the freshman incoming players and the two portal pickups it will be enough to get us back on top then you don't know ball at all and can expect the same type of season in 2026 as in 2025. Oh so wait around for a coaching visit and then they don't except the position. We don't have time like that to play around. We are on the reality timeline. You know the URGENCY timeline like all other schools, especially in the conference.
I didn't think about a 22 player limit being imposed, but that wouldn't surprise me in the least. I mean why not limit the MOST successful program in our school's athletic history by cutting the scholarship number, right?
The second line about coaches we want being "BUSY" doesn't fly, even a little. Now, if MH also cut coaches salaries to be in sync with cutting roster size, then that would make a lot of sense and explain why we haven't filled those 2 spots. Who knows what's going on because there is no information, communication or actions currently emanating from the our Athletic department about our beloved softball program.
Frustration grows when we have much and want more, than when we have nothing and want some.
Maggard said that baseball and softball would be funded for the entire 25 scholarships allowed. If that isn’t happening then there’s another separate conversation that needs to be had about Maggard. If Coach Aly’s own personal timeline is to wait nearly 2 months after the season is over to hire coaches and bring in more quality transfers then there’s a lot to question with that mindset. Fans reserve the right to be fans and be frustrated if standards of a program are seemingly not being met.
I had heard 2.5 weeks ago that she had narrowed it down to two people for each position. In each case, one candidate was one she knew well, but lacked experience and the second candidate was very experienced, but she didn't know well.
As of last week, my source was told she had made the decisions, but she didn't give names or details about which way she went.
If the decisions truly have been made, not sure why there hasn't been any kind of announcement or leak.
No coach that any school with a history of success would want to hire would ever be "too busy" to explore a chance to work there.
As others have already said, Dr. Maggard has already stated publicly that the full number of NCAA allowed scholarships [25] will be funded if coach Habetz so desires.
