And TxSt is on the verge of R1.
PAC12. Just has a tad better ring than the conference Louisiana Tech jumped to. Intriguing. Could it lead to bigger local funding? Maybe. But I remember a number of locals who stopped supporting us post move away from GSC slate of schools. And name change still galls some alumni.
But, man. Just to have that name as our conference. Hmmm. Glad it’s above my pay scale. The Belt has some really good match ups for us but this possible link is something to at least pursue. I think.
Definitely a step up in competition for football & men's basketball. Don't know enough about PAC members' other sports to compare. To be fair SBC diamond sports are pretty strong but we factor heavily into that. Glancing at the PAC12, MWC, & WCC websites only San Diego St., WSU, & Gonzaga offer Baseball. Softball schools are Oregon St., San Diego St., Boise, Utah St., & Colorado St. Believe a conference needs seven members to offer baseball/softball. They'll get there in Softball. We'd probably have to park Baseball in another conference.
It would be nice if UL would contact Texas State, find out the status of their possible move to the PAC 12, discuss a travel partnership, create an advocate for us and then contact the PAC 12 and express our interest. Also, readdress our market demographics with them that should be expanded to Lake Charles, Baton Rouge, Thibodeaux/Houma and Alexandria and the Lafayette destination that make UL an attractive addition. And address our academic standing and overall facilities. Let's educate the PAC 12 about UL and why we should be a considered central time zone candidate.
Maybe they are pursuing this behind the scenes. Who knows? Again, if the rumored media contract is true, it makes financial sense to do this if invited. At the very least, it does no harm to kick the tires on this and make some phone calls.
Also, if the unlikely happened and they invited us, there is no downside to this. If, in the future, things don't work out, I'm pretty sure we would be welcomed back to the SBC or invited to the AAC.
Pay attention to the ongoing settlement. None of this will matter around 2027. There will be the "PRO" level which is the SEC, BIG10, & whoever they invite to join them. That division will pay players a salary to play & schooling won't matter. Then everyone else will be in the "AMATEUR" level which is the current NCAA.
