I've been giving a lot of thought to the future of football recruitment, especially in light of the changing dynamics of today's sports landscape. I think Dez, has to shift in his approach. It's essential for Dez to recognize that the traditional model of recruiting talented high school players may not be as sustainable in today's football world. The emergence of the portal has changed the game, creating new opportunities and challenges. I believe a hybrid strategy, combining both portal acquisitions and high school recruitment, could be the key to success. The reality is, if our team performs exceptionally well in the first two years, we run the risk of losing our top talents to big schools offering lucrative NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) deals. The portal, in this context, becomes not just a contingency plan but a proactive strategy to fill gaps, adapt to changing dynamics, and maintain a competitive edge. In my view, embracing a mix of portal acquisitions and high school recruitment is the future of football. It provides a balanced approach that allows teams to tap into the immediate impact of experienced players while fostering the growth and development of young talents.
I think to compete we have to use the transfer portal because the dynamics of college sports has changed.
How many transfers do our softball team have ? Without those transfers we probably wouldn’t be a top 25 team.
Shows the success in using the transfer portal. Adapt or Die. These athletes owe nothing to this University they are not fans like we are fans.
As a coach your job is to win games and have the best team possible.
I do not necessarily like it but you are correct. There has to be some combo of recruiting guys and getting them to stay and filling gaps or upgrading positions via the portal. If the new subdivision breaks off, it will get worse. They are trying to create an Open Division or pre-NFL league.
. . . softball has been fortunate that huge NIL has not taken over . . . how does one compete in the portal as a football coach without NIL dollars . . . help me Rhonda, help, help me Rhonda . . .
I think some things are realistic and some are not. Fans are unrealistic at times because they do not fully understand the premium set on DL/OL. We all agree the portal is needed to help certain positions because we are simply too young there, or not good enough.
Example, the Cajuns tripped in two former FBS OL, both play the tackle position. One has committed to Texas Tech, and the other is now holding offers from Missouri, Oklahoma St and Kentucky as of last night. Why? Because we can't pay them what any of those programs are paying as P5s.
How did we get a DE/OLB from a P5? He RS and has no experience as a starter. Those type of athletes can be found easily for good P5s. Clearly an emphasis is on good OL prospects right now.
The next route is JC, if you want immediate help or an OL from FCS. But if they are good, you are not going to outbid P5s for those as well. If they are solid but you believe a kid in your system is better and ready to make an impact, you probably stick with the athlete you are developing.
I'm interested in seeing how this works out after you miss on a major need in the portal.
