I was a fan of Jay Johnson at the time. He was an offensive coordinator who has called games as an OC. He was working for a defensive minded guy who was a Nick Saban disciple. He knows the area and the high school coaches already.
Fast forward a couple of years later I am excited of what Mike's future can be here. This year is HUGE for him.
I agree. I liked the hire of Mike personally, but as we know, many questioned that hire and many are still taking a wait and see approach. I think if the Cajuns have a good year (8 wins or more) it will have a very positive impact on recruiting and prove that this is a stable program that has established a firm winning tradition.
. . . if he was willing to take a substantial cut in pay to become a head coach here, you may have found the only coach in the country that would consider that . . . I do remember when he was here, his wife and my wife (and maybe yours was out there also) holding baseball practice for some 12 year olds when the coaches would not do so . . . definitely a great guy and a great family . . . not sure it would have been a better hire than Des, however . . .
We're going to find out.
I watched Des play. He was a beast. And he's a worker. And he's smart.
AND he's a great human being.
I think he'll take us to the next level. But if he doesn't, I'll still be proud and happy that he's our coach. We need a lot more people like him.
