Well, hitting is one of the hardest things to do in all of sports, BUT these first four games and all of last year makes it seem damn near impossible. Bunting is all about determination. If a player is determined to give himself up and focus on getting the bunt down, it will happen. However, I still think our approach at the plate needs to change.

In 2013 and 2014 when Deggs was here, if you couldn't bunt, you wouldn't play. That simple. 90% of those starters were NEVER asked to bunt in high school. They learned how to quick. It can be done but right now, we suck at it after 4 games.

Strentz kick was probably a little bigger from my recollection but you can run down that 2014 lineup: Adams, Conrad, Strentz, Harrison, Shug, Butler, Trahan, Compton. They all were kickin. Probably helped that Deggs didn't care if you missed an off speed pitch by a mile. The entire goal was don't get beat by a fastball. So even with the leg kick if all you are looking for is FB, it is easier to time up even with high velo for good athletes.

You are right. They saw a lot of high 80's righties and just timed them up.

Judging from only what I have seen so far of Well's system (I have no inside info). He seems to prefer a quieter load. He has a two strike approach we used in high school that I hated and that Tony Gwynn specifically roasted in his book. That is with two strikes, you spread out, crouch down, and don't move your foot at all. Just let your hands do all the work.

Mr. Gwynn's rebuttal was always, why have two different swings. You have worked on swinging a certain way your whole life to then try to change that with 2 strikes and expect to be successful? I have seen some people have success with that approach, but personally, I was with Mr. Gwynn on that one. It's one thing to shorten up a little with two strikes and another to radically change everything you do and are comfortable with.

Edit: for those that don't know, Tony Gwynn is still statistically the best two strike hitter who ever played.

If it is hitting advice, you can bet your house and your first born child that whatever Tony Gwynn or Rod Carew says is gospel.

The reason I was raising hell over the summer when the silence about JT was deafening. We were told that Wells would take over hitting and that JT would focus on recruiting. Well look who's still interacting with players while he's coaching first? Nothing has changed...and I'm talking from the top of the coaching staff on down.

Join the club sir. I said over the summer that JT would still have a big role with the players / hitters. I even said he would coach first base when he wasn’t out recruiting but a few people on this board “really close to the program” knew better. That was “never going to happen”. Oh, ok.
