Agreed. Kim was an amazing player. I'm not a big women's hoops fan, but I would definitely go out of my way to see her play when she was a Cajun.
Not taking anything away from Brian, but Kim led the country in scoring, and was unstoppable. And then validated it by being a good professional player as well.
The question didn't say who was the best athlete for their sport.
The question didn't say who was the best athlete for their sex.
Who was the best athlete of the 80's.
It was this man, hands down.....

LOL
Short answer? Mitchell
Long answer? Brian Mitchell.
This is not even debatable. :-)
This is such a subjective question.
To me, I'd have to qualify that question before I answer. My base answer would be Hollis Conway... because he separated himself from almost all others on a national and international level in his sport. You would probably have to point to Kim Perrot under that same criteria as the next greatest athlete.
But as a popular sport athlete that was phenomenal at both the collegiate and professional level... that goes to Brian Mitchell. In the traditional sense of what you think of as a high school, college, professional athlete... Brian Mitchell was our greatest. But again... the answer comes with some qualifying details.
I know some may debate me on this... but when it comes to the sport that I think has a bastion of "greatest athletes of all other athletes"... I think it's basketball - especially among some of the guards and forwards I've known as athletes over the years. Amazing hand eye coordination and physical gifts as athletes. But there are so many fantastic athletes in basketball... all over the place... it's hard for some to realize just how great so many are... in each program... year in and year out. When one stands out... they are the premier athlete of athletes IMO.
At his peak, Hollis Conway was the 2nd best high jumper in the world. That is a phenomenal achievement.
Brian Mitchell was the greatest kick returner in NFL history. He is the only athlete I can think of, that we have had, about whom anything remotely like that can be said.
A portion of what some of these 1980's athletes are being given credit for occured in the 1990s
