"NCAA inquiry frustrates UL"

Another in a series of bogus headlines

Have you heard about the newly formed acronymical organization known as NBS? Now before you incorrectly think it stands for "No BS" (the common BS) let me correct and state it does in fact stand for "No BS" "No Big Story"

The Advertiser has sent at least 3 different reporters to create 6 days of New Bogus Slants for the FrontPage and main page headlines of the paper. Each one designed in advance to transmute, lead into, or segue into the next day’s story created out of the paragraphs of the day before.

Incidentally the last name initial of the 3 reporters spells N.B.S.

As has been well documented in the paper over the past week the NCAA came, inquired, and left. In the 2 months since the waivers of free speech were signed by all, the NCAA has matched the no-blab stance of the responsible local parties. Only Jordan and the Advertiser have disrespected the No Blab Stance.

Anyway the latest headline is bogus! The NCAA has done nothing to frustrate UL, it is the tabloid journalism of the Daily Advertiser, and its inability to comprehend the simple concept of various levels of probes, inquires and investigations that has frustrated UL. Its Non Believable Stories have frustrated those not at liberty to fully speak.

The parsing of words and timelines by the Advertiser, has served to create inquiries into schematics that has driven a weeks worth of headlines that don't match the facts.

I want to tell them that No-Bodies Stupid, but some are falling for the Advertiser created news and that is what is frustrating, and that is why I wrote this NBS "New Bit of Satire." on this Non Believable Series.

Wow! Another story with an exaggerated headline meant to sell more paper. What we are seeing; with the Internet, the 24 hour news cycle and various forms of competition, is the proliferation of the Dan Rather School of Yellow Journalism. Hey, how about a real hard hitting piece for once. Why not do some real in depth reporting and tell me who is behind these story. Who "leaked" the information and what do they have to gain from all this? Why not hold their credibility up for examination. I'm not holding my breath waiting for any of this because like I stated earlier this is a non story that being stretch for maximum value.

The one thing that frustrates me is that the Advertiser has not written that Jordan was not eligible and that was why he was asked to leave. Everyone who posts here knows that. However, not everyone who reads the Advertiser does and not everyone who is a fan of another school getting third hand reports knows that. I don't know why they are reluctant to print that simple fact.

If anyone should know what a full-blown NCAA investigation looks, feels and tastes like, the list would include University of Louisiana President Ray Authement.

Authement has been at the university for more than 30 years and knows first-hand about the 1973 investigation that resulted in a two-year suspension of the men's basketball program.

"It was very extensive," Authement said. "We spent at least four months investigating, documenting and answering the NCAA's questions."

Authement was the university's vice president at the time and chaired the committee that wrote answers to the NCAA's questions.

"I recommended certain actions be taken that I was turned down on," he said. "I feel had we taken those actions early, the NCAA would not have come down on us as they did. But I didn't prevail at the time."

A staggering number of allegations was made in that case, which prompted the NCAA's first death penalty before the term was used for SMU football in the 1980's.

"It was alleged that there were monies given to basketball players after a win, and how that money was exchanged," Authement said.

"There was a player who flunked freshman math, but had four A's in graduate (level) math.

"It was alleged that people were flown in from certain states to take exams for players.

"They said we bought a belt for a recruit. What happened there was that he was in a pick-up basketball game and his belt broke, so we got him a belt. They (investigators) went to Abdalla's and found the belt."

Once the dust settled in 1973, UL President Clyde Rougeau resigned and Authement ascended to his current position. He then had the unhappy duty of cleaning up after the mess.

It was a dark chapter in UL history, and something Authement has strived to prevent since then.

So, Authement naturally wanted a clear indication of the NCAA's intentions in April when its enforcement arm requested interviews with the basketball team and staff.

Former recruit Berry Jordan has alleged infractions by coach Robert Lee and his staff, and Dan Matheson was dispatched to conduct the interviews. In his correspondence with the university, Matheson used the word "investigation."

"I asked several times if we were under investigation and was told no, that it was a fact-finding mission," Authement said. "I was told I would be informed in writing of any formal investigation.

"When I was asked if we were under investigation, I said no. I've never covered up anything and I don't intend to start now."
