It has nothing with truly wanting him. We do, as we also want Tim Floyd. However, its about opportunity and timing. He is a hot commodity at this moment and with any success in the tourney, he will likely become a bigger candidate for more prestigeous jobs. We can't compete with BCS schools and what they can offer him. We've already committed to offering and paying our next coach a salary that will be amongst the best in the SBC and is well above our budget allowance per the state but have decided that we will compensate a good candidate. Kennedy may be at the next level and we just can't go there.

One big upset in the tourney doesn't mean he is unreachable or we would have lost Fletcher and others.

Yes, but he has put himself in a position to land a BCS job after this season or the next. Do you really seeing him coming to Lafayette for 3+ years? As much as I like the UL job, I don't see him bringing them to Final Fours anytime soon. He could win a game or two in the tourney at UL, but he can do that at Murray State. UL could offer him more money, but the difference is marginal compared to what BCS schools can offer. Unless he's just really in love with Lafayette, his next job likely won't be at UL.

I agree. Tim Floyd it is?

I think that Bob Marlin from SHSU would be perfect for this program.

I hope so, I'd prefer him over Butch. He's a proven commodity as a HC, Butch is not.

No, but you couple that with the fact that he was already a hot name floating around out there and a national audience saw his team beat an overrated Vandy team in the big tournament. Also, his team had 30 wins this year and easily won their conference and conference tourney...That, with the big win, puts him on another level. Often, a coach in a similar situation uses something like this to springboard his popularity and really market themselves for bigger jobs.

He likely would be. Actually, all of the names that are currently high on the list: Kennedy, Floyd, Pierre, Kaspar and Marlin would all be GREAT hires and we'd be happy/lucky to have any or either.

Re: Probably have to say goodbye to Billy Kennedy
I stand by my previous statement elsewhere: Billy Kennedy is too young to make this his final destination. There are some reasons for him to come here besides more pay, but some of those can be addressed by other schools as well as us.

UL has interest in him but he has no interest in UL. He has bigger fish to fry. Going to UL is a lateral move for him. Hes going elsewhere hes not even on the screen for UL.

You are wrong....
That's all I can tell you. The game yesterday has elevated his stature. But he was more of a factor in this search than people though before. And he will still be a factor in this search after. The jobs that are open with the exception of Auburn, simply do not fit his profile.

What about Steve Donahue of Cornell? I can't imagine they pay him a lot, right?

Re: Coaching position seems quiet
Frontrunner?
I like Kasper
-
Re: Coaching position seems quiet
Nobody knows who the frontrunner is. That is only known by those close to the decision makers. However, Floyd is definitely going to be that guy if he is cleared by the NCAA. The only question is when. Kaspar and Marlin are going to be right there though.

Re: Coaching position seems quiet
We will only have one true choice when all is said and done. Let's all welcome Butch back to Lafayette and get behind his team.

Butch really only has a shot if Floyd and Kennedy are out. Kennedy probably is with his nice tournament but if Floyd is cleared, he's the obvious first choice.
